The AfricaBound Fundraiser is raising money for the children at the Calvary Zion home in Kenya, and will help Jalisa afford volunteering!

"Every 14 seconds a child is orphaned in Sub-Saharan Africa"

According to UNICEF, in 2009 there were approximately 2.6 million orphans in Kenya and out of those 1.2 million are orphans due to Aids.

Aids is a leading cause of death among adults between the ages of 15-59 years old, and the uprising of the Aids pandemic is causing a significance increase of orphans. Furthermore, the widespread and high levels of poverty present a major and disabling handicap to the well being and the welfare of children in Kenya. Children from poor families suffer from lack of access to basic human needs such as food, water and shelter as well as basic social services such as education, health care sanitation. Because of AIDS many children have no parents to support them. Instead the children are forced to fend for themselves at a very young age and for their siblings. Many of these children are HIV positive.

With over 2 million orphans in Kenya, and with the productive labour force dying out, there is not enough people or social workers to give the attention these children need. Significantly, this is where short-term volunteers come in hand. Some roles include; help the children with homework, teach them English, teach them fun games and dances, maintenance of the home, keep the children groomed, and the list goes on. The most important role I believe is providing the children with the best possible support and care.

Fortunately, this summer I am given the opportunity to volunteer at an orphanage in Kenya. The orphanage I will be volunteering at is called Calvary Zion Children’s Home located in Mombasa, Kenya. The home first opened in 1998 starting off with 56 children, and by this summer alone they will be expanding to 100 orphans. I feel I can finally put my skills in use, and try to make a difference in these children’s lives.

My goal is to raise $4000 in total to help cover the costs of my program (program fees, basic expenses & flight). Some of the money I raise will go towards the home also. Any contribution that you are able to make to help me achieve my goal would be much appreciated!

Donations can be made by cash, cheque, or online though this web-site.

Thank you for your time and support!
