The friends and family of Julian Walker ask that you help Julian and his family as he recovers from a devastating car accident.

Whether you remember him as a National Merit Finalist, or as a fun-loving peer at Emory University and fiercely competitive basketball player, or whether you know him as a distinguished member of the Nu Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., we all know Julian Walker. What you may not know is that on January 28, 2012, at the age of 33, Julian lost his sight in a devastating car accident.

Since that time, Julian has been under the continuous and watchful care of Retina and Cornea specialists at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute. One of the first surgeries after the accident was an attempt to re-attach the retina in his right eye in hopes of regaining some vision to that eye; sadly, the damage was too extensive to complete the surgery. Within the next six months, Julian underwent six additional surgeries with hopes of repairing damage to his retinas and cornea, but despite these many procedures he has endured, Julian has not regained any sight. Furthermore, his ongoing treatment plan dictates that he will need to visit a retina and cornea specialist on a monthly basis to ensure that the condition of his eyes is stable. Julian and his family plan to seek additional opinions from other renowned specialists to make the most informed decision on the need and likely success of future surgeries.

As persevering as ever, Julian has embarked on the journey to live a full and rich life as a blind person. He must now relearn the skills necessary to take care of himself, navigate his private and public surroundings, and advance his goals as an advocate. In practical terms, Julian will spend three months away from his family at the Louisiana Center for the Blind to learn the skills necessary to regain as much of his independence as possible.

As always, Julian draws strength from his Faith and the tremendous love and support he receives from his family and friends. He is blessed to have four wonderful children - Michael, Isaiah, Julian Jr., and Madison. He credits his loving and devoted girlfriend, Tiffany, as his rock and says he receives daily support and unconditional love from his father, Robert, mother, Deborah, brother, Travis, and sister, Nayasha.

Despite this horrible tragedy, we are truly grateful and blessed that he is here with us. Now it is our turn to do what we can. In addition to keeping Julian and his steady recovery in your thoughts and prayers, we also ask that you donate whatever amount you can, large or small, to help Julian and his family pay the exorbitant medical expenses that he has incurred to date and will continue to incur in his ongoing treatment plan and future surgeries. It is vital that we pull together as a community to help our treasured friend regain his independence so that he may live his life’s purpose. Thank you.
