The family of Amanda Standifer is respectfully requesting your support to help her fight against brain cancer.

Here is Amanda’s Story:

Amanda (Dugie) Standifer was born July 23, 1978 in Austin, TX. She grew up in New Braunfels, TX where she currently resides. She graduated from New Braunfels High School and was an active member of the Marine Corps ROTC program for four years. Amanda and her husband Brent have four boys 14, 12, 11, and 7. Brent is a sub-contract painter with no medical benefits. She was a dispatcher for New Braunfels Utilities for five years working 12 hour night shifts. Amanda is a big music lover and enjoys spending time with her boys and family. Amanda tries to remain as active as possible with her boys but is becoming increasingly difficult and exhausting for her.

Amanda’s symptoms began in April 2011 Amanda could not feel the brake pedal while driving and got into a minor car accident. Her Mom and Sister took her to the ER where they did a CT scan and found a tennis ball size tumor which was attached to her optical nerve. Following the CT scan the hospital wanted to conduct an MRI but Amanda began to have seizures. Once the seizures were under control they conducted the MRI, then decided to transport her to San Antonio for emergency surgery. On May 13, 2011 (Mother’s Day) Amanda went into surgery to have the tumor removed from her brain. The surgery was successful but results would show that it was malignant cancer Grade IV Gliblastoma. Immediately after the surgery Amanda had seizures for 6 hours and they placed her in a drug induced comma. Amanda had all of the symptoms of having a stroke and lost function of her left side and had to go through physical therapy to recover use of the left side of her body. Since then Amanda is able to walk but still has difficulty with her left side motor skills.

Amanda has gone through radiation and chemo treatments for a whole year after the tumor was removed. The tumor came back June 15, 2012. This time they gave Amanda a stronger form of chemo treatment through a chest port to her heart. On July 23, 2012 (Amanda’s Birthday) MRI results would show that a 2nd tumor had formed on her hypothalamus in her brain resulting in her Dr.’s telling her they would not operate again and stopping further treatment. They now have referred her to a research study center in San Antonio which she is currently participating in. Amanda is unable to drive due to the risk of having a seizure and having returning symptoms of double vision and headaches. Amanda is unable to work due to this debilitating evil illness. Amanda’s health insurance alone cost her over $500 a month and it does not cover everything that she needs. They can’t afford health insurance on her husband’s income for the four boys or him and their not eligible for Medicaid for another year. They are starting to struggle on paying just the essentials for them and the four boys. All things considered Amanda remains upbeat and “positive” on most days. She is still trying to be a good mother focusing on the boys and their daily routine.

The financial burden of the medical aspect of the situation is taking a toll on family members trying to help support them. That’s why we are reaching out to you for assistance. Your support and generosity will be a miracle to them.
