Please support my mission to our "Sister" Pediatric ICU in Cambodia. Your donations will help enable our upcoming trip this October.

As many of you know, I am a nurse in the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) at Children's Hospital Boston. About 4 years ago, the nurses here started a program call "Cans For Care" - a mentoring, educational and supply support program for our "Sister" Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the National Pediatric Hospital (NPH) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This past March, I was chosen on behalf of Children's Hospital Boston's MSICU to travel to Cambodia to work in the NPH PICU. I spent three weeks providing hands-on education to the nursing and physician staff and donated some much needed supplies. What I saw was beyond my comprehension! To say that this unit is under-staffed, inadequately equipped and poorly prepared is a tremendous understatement. The staff and patients are living and functioning in poverty without access to the basic education, supplies and medications they require.

NPH is the only nationally funded pediatric hospital in the country - as a result, it is in the worst condition. Their mortality rate exceeds 50%! Their needs are overwhelming - but I truly believe after my time there that this project can make a difference. Even the small changes we instituted in March have begun to improve the patient outcomes at the NPH PICU.

As a result, I've been asked to return at the end of October to spend another month in the PICU in Phnom Penh alongside a few of my colleagues. We will continue to work with the staff to educate them on simple changes in their practice that can hopefully drastically improve their patient survival rates. But I need your help!

"Cans for Care" is a wonderful foundation but we are new in our development and limited in our funding. We rely mostly on donations from the bottle returns on the soda cans we drink from! As a result, we have minimal assets to support this October venture. This is where I need your support!

Your donations will help to maximize our efforts abroad this October by alleviating some of the costs of this project including educational matterials, staffing/travel expenses and supplies and equipment.

No amount is too small - even $5 can provide 2 weeks worth of essential hand sanitizer!

I cannot thank you enough in advance for your support of this project I believe in so passionately!

With gratitude,

Brienne

P.S. Enjoy the pictures - and feel free to ask me for the funny (and sometimes sad!) stories that go along with them!
