Greenhouse Scholar Meseret wants to improve healthcare in Ethiopia, but needs help to get there. Fund her research trip to Addis Adaba.

“One of my most important personal and career goals is to establish a healthcare NGO in Ethiopia…”

After her uncle fell victim to Ethiopia’s tragically under-resouced healthcare system, Meseret vowed to improve healthcare in her homeland by starting her own non-government organization (NGO) to provide compassionate and improved healthcare in her home country.

Meseret is a Greenhouse Scholar and senior at the University of Denver, studying to become a Pediatrician. Greenhouse Scholars provides comprehensive personal and financial support to high-performing, under-resourced college students. Meseret’s outstanding academic achievements at Overland High School in Aurora and dedication to volunteer work in her community, led to her selection as a Greenhouse Scholar and to her success at the University of Denver. Now Meseret is taking the next step and is returning to Ethiopia this fall to conduct research on the Ethiopian healthcare system and lay the groundwork for her dream.

Your support enables Greenhouse Scholars to fund Meseret’s research. The University of Denver’s research grant program does not cover the cost of travel and incidentals, such as vaccinations, which are prohibitively expensive for Meseret.

Meseret will conduct research in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by interviewing local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as Hope for Children Ethiopia and Entoto Outreach Center to detail the ways in which these organizations interact with health agencies and clinics in Ethiopia. Meseret plans to discover best practices for NGO-healthcare partnerships and to apply that knowledge towards establishing her own NGO.

78% of our scholars are first-generation college students and have an average family income of just $28,705.

Greenhouse Scholars uses a Whole Person approach to offer intellectual, academic, personal, professional and financial support to high-achieving, under-resourced college students. Support includes one-on-one mentorship, access to a vast professional network, assistance in securing internships, an annual three-day leadership training symposium, and peer support, in addition to financial grants. While the average GPA of first-generation college students is a 2.6 (with a 2.8 for all students), Greenhouse Scholars average a 3.4 GPA.

Our network of support services means the day our Greenhouse Scholars leave college, they’ll be prepared to succeed in their professional endeavors and make significant contributions in their communities.
