Salina is raising funds to cover her Cherokee Nation immersion trip. Funds raised will go towards supplies for community outreach projects.

Hello there,
I am Salina Wunderle, a graduating senior at Northeastern Illinois University. I ambitiously applied and interviewed to participate in the Alternative Spring Break Trip to Oklahoma- Cherokee Nation. To my delight, I was one of the few to be awarded this opportunity.

This is a complete immersion experience---before, during, and after the trip. To begin this journey, I am priming myself by researching and writing a report. The people of the Cherokee Nation and their ancestors have faced incredible strife and I am looking forward to learning and understanding more about their situation. Some topics covered in this program are: background and history of Cherokee Nation, poverty, mental health issues, and policies affecting a sovereign nation.

Although there is no cost to participate, each of us is expected to raise funds to go toward projects on the trip. I am excited to participate in the Cherokee Nation trip, as it will provide an excellent opportunity for myself and others to become educated and involved in these community outreach efforts.

I have begun my fundraising efforts by collecting aluminum cans that litter my neighborhood and turning them in at the local recycling center. I like to think of it as improving two communities with one effort. Additional revenues will be earned from a bake sale I will participate in on campus and from any funds I can raise using Give Forward.

During the trip we will meet the people of the communities and learn about their life realities. In doing so, we will work to improve parts of their community by cleaning, painting, and building along with other service projects. At the end of each day, participants will take time to reflect by journaling and sharing our experiences with each other.

Upon our return we will create and implement a service project based on our experience. I will also participate in a presentation to share my stories of the eye-opening sojourn to Cherokee Nation and my newfound knowledge.
Thank you for taking interest in my (our) endeavors!

As a token of my gratitude to donors, I will e-mail a pre-trip report, copies of my reflections, our post-trip service project plan and photos of my entire experience.
