Who knew cancer was so expensive?

By starting this fund I'm hoping to help my mom with the ridiculous amount of money that is spent on the simple things that aren't expected. Gas (she lives more than three hours away from the hospital) , the supplies needed to help her get better and food are expensive.

My mom, Jamie Day, and her husband David live down by Fort Garland, Colorado on the side of a mountain. She loves living off the grid and they are building their dream cabin slowly but surely. David has two brain tumors and has seizures every so often so the fresh air is beneficial. David gets disability and that is his only source of income. My mom is a substitute teacher and she works in two school districts down in the valley below their mountain. She also plays the guitar and sings at a little pizza place in the closest town. They make enough money to survive but cancer decided to mess with the budget a bit.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2012. It is stage 1 cancer and a double bilateral mastectomy was the best option. While she was preparing for the mastectomy, her gallbladder decided it wanted out and she had to have emergency surgery at the end of March. The nearest hospital is in Alamosa, around forty miles away from their home. When she left the hospital after the gallbladder surgery, she went to Fort Garland and stayed in a hotel until it was feasible for her to get back up her mountain. After a week at the hotel, she went home and started getting ready for the mastectomy. She had to come up to Colorado Springs, a long ways from home, for the mastectomy. Eighteen days after the gallbladder surgery, she had a double mastectomy.

My mom is currently staying in Colorado Springs, at the John Zay House, recovering from a very invasive surgery. She will be staying here until next Monday and then will be heading back to Fort Garland to stay at the hotel for at least the next couple of weeks. She is doing well, feeling a bit stronger and is walking around a bit further every day.

She will be out of work for a while, probably until the school year ends which means no income from the schools for a good four months. She makes enough money for groceries when playing the guitar but she won't be doing that for at least a month because she is not allowed to lift her arms or pick anything up.

I am hoping to raise money to keep her from worrying about the gas money and food and all the little things you never think of until you have to pay for it. Even a dollar, the change at the bottom of your purse, the pennies you find on the ground are going to help.

Please feel free to contact me, Amy Hrinek, with any questions. My number is 720 273 0135. If you would rather mail her something I can give you her post office address over text or phone. Thank you for anything you can give
