Drogo the kitten fell 6 stories and lived---but still has a mountain of medical bills. Thank you so much friends and family for your help!
We are thanking our lucky stars that we named our kitten Drogo, after the insanely tough warrior Drogo from Game of Thrones, because he recently survived a 6-story fall from the patio of my Brooklyn condo.
As many of you know, on Wednesday June 27, 2012, around 4:30/5 am, our 8 month old Ragdoll kitten Drogo somehow got out of the living room window (we're guessing wind gusts opened it beyond the small crack it was opened), on to the 6th floor patio and fell six stories to the sidewalk on Union and Powers Street in Williamsburg Brooklyn. A good samaritan who had just closed up Barcade next door rescued him, took him to Blue Pearl ER, and he miraculously survived.
Drogo sustained significant internal injuries including a collapsed lung, bleeding into his abdomen, severe circulatory compromise, and an extremely bruised back and hind quarters. He possibly has a series of hairline fractures in his pelvis and back femurs as he's having incredible difficulty walking. The amazing staff at Blue Pearl ER prepared us to possibly put him down on Wednesday, as his injuries were possibly beyond the point of fixing, both due to the severity of his injuries and the financial burden of covering the medical expenses required to fix those injuries.
Little Drogo is apparently a modern day feline Lazerus, because to the astonishment of Blue Pearl ER staff, Drogo started doing better--and better--and better!! After a few days listed as critical, we were able to bring Drogo home to his new limited living quarters in a massive dog crate, where he's getting a lot of bed rest, reincorporating foods through delicious baby food, and learning how to use his back legs again. I'm pretty sure Drogo and Chicken, my older cat who was injured before I adopted her, will have very similar hobbling struts from this day forth. He's on multiple medications that he needs three times a day and we hope that he continues to gain strength--and not need any more hospital visits. We feel profoundly blessed that our 8 month old boy can have many healthy happy years a head of him -- probably just nowhere NEAR a window, door, or patio.
This experience was an emotional roller-coaster for so many reasons and we're fortunate to be on the healing side of this trauma. This was also a dramatic reminder to have pet insurance for accidents such as these--something that we had not yet obtained for our new family addition. Thank goodness for credit cards, as three were used to ensure Drogo got the life saving care he needed. Friends and family, both who have and have not met Drogo, have been offering to help in anyway they can. Thank you immensely for your kindness and generosity. Every little bit helps as we try to pay off the charges for saving Sir Drogo. I hope that should you ever find yourself dealing with a pet emergency, you are as fortunate as we have been to have someone save your pet and take them to the ER and have an ER staff as wonderful as the folks at Blue Pearl. Also, please feel free to forward this link on to anyone you think may be interested.
Some pictures are attached so you can see how adorable Drogo the 8 month old Ragdoll kitten is---and observe what the vets are calling an absolute miracle.
We don't feel so nerdy about naming him after a Game of Thrones character anymore considering what a badass he is.
Much love and thanks
