Diskin Elementary School lost its Reading is Fundamental program, 64 of the kids in this school are homeless and more than 75% below poverty

We have until Tuesday December 4th 2012 to raise the money. More than 80% of the kids at this Las Vegas school qualify for free lunch, meaning most of the children attending the school live at or below the poverty line. 64 of the kids are homeless, and there is a family living out of Shade Tree Shelter for abused families.

Despite the financial challenges that these children face at home, on Thursday, the District will announce that Pat Diskin is to be honored as a 5 Star school. There are only 27 schools of the 300 in Clark County that have earned this prestigious designation, and the majority of schools who earn it are located in high-income areas where there is a lot of parental donations and support. Pat Diskin has earned this based on their superior test scores and low discipline rating – a demonstration of the commitment of their teaching and administrative staff.

Unfortunately, because Diskin’s student test scores are so high, they recently lost their funding for a program that helped their students excel – RIF which stands for Reading is Fundamental. The RIF program provided 3 books per year for every child in the school to take home – books that could be shared with other siblings. LV126 gets to raise the funds to re-instate this essential program, and provide books for these underprivileged kids to read. There are 700 children at the school.
