The family and friends of Gary Furlow invite you to be a part of making his dream come true. Please consider donating if you can. Thank you

Dad was diagnosed with Stage IV Non Small Cell Lung Cancer in October of 2010. This cancer had taken up residence at the very root of dad's left lung next to his heart and in his bones. Sitting in that doctor's office and hearing those words felt equivalent to someone walking up firing a shot directly at our chests. There were a lot of things said after that..."terminal", "no cure", "limited treatment options" and the worst of all, "6 to 18 months"! In my head I thought "NO!"

We got home and after a brief time dad says to me, "I'm not afraid to die". In awe I looked at him and was aware even after all these years he was still teaching me about life. These are the words of a man who has lived his life in such a way that he could stand facing this devastating diagnosis with faith, hope and without fear of his past. My dad was teaching me that to live a life that was honorable was to look death in face without fear.

We found a doctor that we felt we could trust at a comprehensive cancer treatment center, four hours away called Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and chemotherapy began.

It has been about 8 months now. After 7 rounds of intensive chemotherapy and now entering his second set in a clinical trial dad has continued to amaze his cancer team with very few side effects to the treatment and continued good health. People continually are amazed that the man in front of them is fighting such a battle inside of him.

It is time to look at more than just the heart's desire to live but the dreams we hold inside them that make the living that much sweeter.

Some think of going to exotic, far away places when they consider a 'dream vacation'- but not dad. Dad's dream has always been to return to Alaska via the Alaskan Highway, breath the Alaskan air, surround himself in the beautiful, lush scenery, to fish and capture what he sees in pictures so he can look at them again and again-reliving the dream.

Not everyone knows that dad and mom lived in Alaska, on a small island off of Sitka and on Sitka for several years. On a trip to Oregon to visit family he ran into some hardships and the trip became a permanent relocation. The decision he made at the time was what he believed that a man did to take care of his family but the cost to his heart, his dream, was great. Dad has always had his heart set on returning someday.

That someday is now. Dad will be taking off from his last treatment in Seattle on July 13 and heading north to fulfill his dream. The cost of the trip will be expensive and we are asking for help to make this dream of dad's come true.

I am not asking that anyone put themselves in any kind of hardship or donate extravagantly just whatever you can do to help. A measly $5 equals 1 gallon of diesel for the truck so no amount is too little and all is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Many people have asked if they can donate by check! Certainly! Please send checks to Gary Furlow

And thanks again for all of your support and encouraging words and prayers! You're the best!

Eric and Kasey Loomis of Eric Loomis Fishing in Soldotna have generously offered to donate some charter fishing time to dad while he's in Alaska~Thank you so much!

A big thank you to Alaska Airlines and Angels Flight West for providing dad and mom with a round trip tickets from Anchorage to Seattle and back again so he doesn't have to end his trip early for cancer treatment! This will allow for them to have 5 weeks in Alaska instead of just 3! Thank you!
