Camp needs campers, and campers need camp! Donate now to make camp possible for more children.

Catoctin Quaker Camp is a unique outdoor overnight summer camp. It blends a supportive environment with difficult physical challenges, which pushes children to do things they don’t think they can do, and they end up with more self-confidence. A majority of the staff were campers themselves, and they joyfully recreate the ‘magic’ of camp, a tall order for 16 to 22 year olds.

A group of invested Catoctin Alumni is working to increase diversity within the program. They recruit counselors of color, do diversity trainings with the staff, review programming, and recruit campers of color. What sets them apart is the orientation and training they provide for the campers they recruit. Each camper goes on a hike, where they play, sing, and discuss camp culture with former counselors. When the campers arrive, with gear and transportation provided for them, they are ready for camp.

In the third year of this effort, there are 10 campers in the initiative: 8 returning and 2 new. Two new kids join each year in the youngest group, and attend for all eight years of camp. Two weeks of camp costs $600 per week, transportation costs $50 per camper, and gear (headlamps, nalgenes, wool socks) costs $20 per item. Used gear (sleeping bags, backpacking backpacks) are welcome as well. We need to raise $5,000 in the next month. Can you help make this possible?
