Unfortunately, Fulbright doesn't fund research trips to Liberia, but I have an amazing opportunity and I'm going anyway! This fall, I will be working in Liberia, leading personal narrative and Holocaust education programs for war-affected youth.

When writing my MA thesis "Documenting Systemic Violence: Children's Artwork as Witness" I became personally invested in the plight of children whose lives have been affected by conflict. In looking for different avenues with which to put my research to use, I came across the Strongheart Fellowship, an organization that works to provide education, guidance and empowerment to underpriviledged, often war-affected youth in Robertsport, Liberia. The people at Strongheart agreed to take me on as a Learning Circle guide and allow me to conduct my own research (along the same lines as my thesis work) while implementing the skills I've gained through my background in European history and employment at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Since Fulbright will not provide funding for work in Liberia and the Strongheart Group is tight on funds, as well, I am left to finance my own work, travel, and supplies.

I know that the economy hasn't exactly been kind to most people but I can promise you that your contributions will be put to amazing use - I will have the research, photos, and resulting autobiographies to prove it.
