The family and friends of Kim Hawkins are coming together to raise money to help with past/present/future treatments.

Kimberly Sharber-Hawkins was raised in Rockwall, Texas by her mother, Janie Sharber-Hedgpeth, and dad Gene Sharber. She spent her summers with her aunt and uncle in Pleasant Grove. In 2004, she graduated from El Centro College with a certificate in phlebotomy. Since then, she has made her living as contracted mobile phlebotomist, working six days a week. She now lives in Wylie, Texas with her husband— Danny, her 10-year-old son— Tristen.

In 2009, Kim was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura). ITP is an autoimmune disease that affects the blood’s ability to clot. Her platelets were managed with steroids for the first two years, but this year it has become harder to control. Steroids have many horrible side effects: mouth sores, chest pains, weight gain. She has gained about 100 lbs. Normal counts should be 250-400, and hers are hovering around 10-40, and, as a result, a simple fall could cause internal bleeding.

Kim has had several "experimental" treatments including having her spleen removed. She hoped that would be the answer, but it did not help. With the treatments being "experimental", the insurance company will not pay most of the procedures, and she is unable to afford most of them.

Doctors have prescribed many treatments. However, the treatments will be expensive and insurance will only help with proven and standard treatments. She has had 6 units of blood platelets in the last 1 1/2 months. While trying to support and maintain the family, Kim and Danny spend the majority of their time and efforts into finding a treatment to put this disease into remission, resulting in staggering unpaid medical bills and putting the family on the verge of losing everything. Unfortunately, she is under a lot of stress, and stress starts the bleeding.

Kim loves her family dearly, so she will never give up! Danny and Tristen deserve to have a healthy wife and mother to share their lives and their futures. I can only pray that one day she can live life to the fullest without the fear of bleeding.
