Teachers are partnering with Rescued Readers to bring the gift of literacy to a school in Uganda! Help us get to Bufundi!

As an educator, I believe that all children have the right to learn. I also believe that it takes a village to raise a child. When my dear friend went to Africa and came home heartsick about the lack of books in SCHOOLS, my heart began to stir. I teach daily with an overflow of books in my classroom and I use them in every part of the curriculum as a crucial piece of my instruction. If I want Kindergarten friends to learn to read, they must read. Everyday. They must read by themselves with appropriate books and they must be read to so that they can hear rich, fluent language, etc. If I want them to be authors, they need to see what authors do and have "mentors" in famous authors. The learning experiences that occur through our interactions with books make the learning meaningful, thought provoking and real to my students. The thought of a teacher working as diligently as I try to to have her students be successful without the resources...without ways for them to practice skills they are learning...wanting more be cause he/she knows more is out there but they just don't have it at their fingertips...it breaks my heart, too. It is not okay with me to know that there are educators and students in classrooms wanting much more than they have access to and not being able to have it.
My school, Bessie Ellison Elementary, has begun a partnership with a school in Uganda to help both populations of children develop relationships with a different culture based on a love of literacy. Our school wants to hold hands all the way across the world with another group of children. This school not only has a dream of having books but they have the room ready to call a library but it sits empty today. They know books will come. I am part of a team of educators from my district that is going to their village in July of 2012. We will go to not only take books to their library but to sit alongside their teachers and help fill in the gaps of how to use books in their daily teaching and learning. Their culture respects, but does not embrace literacy the way American schools do so there will be many gaps to fill. However, they are eager. They are ready. They are waiting. Thank you for becoming part of the village to help raise children at Bufundi. Your generous donation and support will cross oceans and cultural lines to bring the gift of literacy to children who have the right to the most appropriate education possible.
