Iowa KidSight is dedicated to enhancing early detection and treatment of vision impairments in young children through screening and public education. Help keep the mission going!

Amblyopia is poor vision in an eye that did not develop normal sight during early childhood. When one eye develops good vision while the other does not, the eye with poorer vision is called amblyopic. Amblyopia is the most common vision problem in preschool-aged children.  Conditions that can lead to Amblyopia are not always easy to recognize.  When undetected or left untreated, Amblyopia can result in permanent vision loss that may adversely affect a person throughout life.  Half of all children with Amblyopia are diagnosed after the age of five, when therapy may no longer be effective.

Iowa Lions Clubs adopt KidSight as a community service project, to detect conditions that can lead to Amblyopia. Lion Volunteers are trained to use a camera called the PhotoScreener™ which takes special instant pictures of eyes.

Screening sessions are scheduled in childcare facilities, public health settings, elementary schools, and/or advertised for a public location (e.g., local community center). A Parent/Guardian is required to complete a Consent Form prior to the screening being conducted. Once vision-screening sessions are conducted, screening photographs are mailed to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for evaluation by specialists.

Once evaluated, results are mailed from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. If a possible vision problem is detected, a letter of referral and a list of local ophthalmologists and optometrists are sent to the Parent/Guardian. Follow-up on any child being referred is also part of the package of services.

Any young child living in Iowa is eligible for the service.  Children age 6 months to 48 months is the target population.

It costs ~$9.00 per child to deliver the service.  How many children can you help?  Contributions may be designated for Program Operations or Program Endowment.

Thank you.
