The family of Tara Kelly is uniting to raise money to help with her battle against Stage IV colon cancer.

Tara Kelly, age 29, was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. Her diagnosis was completely unexpected because she was always considered a healthy individual. In December 2009, she began having symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain and bleeding. She was admitted to the hospital in December and March. After numerous procedures and persistent pain, she was eventually diagnosed with cancer in April 2010.

Shortly after her diagnosis, she was told that she would have to undergo extensive treatment which would consist of radiation (5 days per week) and chemotherapy (24 hours per day/7 days per week) for 5 weeks. She was also told that the radiation may destroy her chance of ever having children. The physicians wanted Tara to start her radiation and chemotherapy right away. However, Tara was determined to undergo egg retrieval in hopes of developing an embryo(s) for future use. I am happy to say that she currently has 7 frozen embryos!

In February of 2010, Tara’s father was also diagnosed with stomach cancer. At the time of his diagnosis, the cancer was localized to his stomach. On April 1, 2010, he went to the operating room to have his stomach removed. Approximately one hour after the start of his surgery, the surgeon came out to inform our family that his cancer had spread to numerous organs. He was sent home on hospice. Unfortunately, he lost his (short but courageous) battle with cancer on June 4, 2010. Tara managed to travel to Saginaw every weekend to be with our father. Regrettably, Tara was admitted to the hospital the night that our father passed away. His funeral was postponed while Tara recovered from surgery. She, somehow, found the strength to recover from a major surgery and make an appearance at his funeral.

In July 2010, Tara also lost her beloved cat. He was only 5 years old. He became ill quickly and passed away approximately 1 week later from unknown causes.

With all of the obstacles that Tara has faced thus far, she is an absolutely “AMAZING” and “STRONG-WILLED” individual. She is an amazing daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and fiancé. She is truly the most ambitious person that I have ever met. She has never once considered herself a victim and she continues to fight this battle with poise and strength. For those of you that know Tara, you know the person that I am speaking of. For those of you that have never met Tara, I sincerely wish that each and every one of you could meet her. You would all be touched by her stamina. She makes me smile whenever she walks into the room. She is a wonderful role model for my daughter and for her other nieces and nephews as well. Even though I am her older sister, she is my “HERO”! Words cannot express her wonderful attitude.

Tara is overly involved with her family and friends. She spends much of her time with her sisters, mother, nieces, and nephews. She takes much pride in her relationships and adores her family to the utmost.

Tara is also engaged to her boyfriend Sean. They have been dating for 5 years. They love spending time together. Their favorite activities include fine dining, wine tasting, and traveling.

Just this past week, Tara underwent surgery to have a cancerous tumor removed. Sadly, we found out that Tara’s cancer has spread to the lining of her stomach and intestines. She will start aggressive chemotherapy next week. Your donation will help to pay for her extensive medical bills and for her expenses of daily living. Due to her diagnosis and constant obstacles, Tara has been unable to work since May 2010. She was a server at a prestigious steakhouse in Birmingham, MI. She also received her certification as a wine sommelier. She has been unable to further pursue this achievement because she was diagnosed shortly after receiving her certification.

Lastly, our family and Sean are also exceptionally thankful for your kindheartedness. It is truly difficult for us to express in words how much we deeply appreciate your donation.

Sincerely,
Tammy Kelly Shapllo
(Tara’s sister)
