The family and friends of Karen Gass are uniting to raise money to help with her battle against cancer. Please show your support!

Karen was diagnosed with chordoma in March 2011. Chordoma is a very rare type of bone cancer that is, as in her case, primarily malignant. Only one people per million are found to develop chordoma, and we are told that Karen’s diagnosis is the first ever reported in the Chattanooga area.

Karen had to endure two surgeries, the first in April, to try to remove part of the tumor through her nasal cavity. The second surgery in May involved shaving a small part of her head and cutting into her skull. As a result of the tumor being wrapped around her optic nerve, Karen can no longer open her right eye. The doctors informed us that it could take months for her eye to open back up and vision to be restored. However, if it does not reopen, she will have to undergo yet another surgery, which may or may not be successful.

She is currently seeking radiation treatment in Jacksonville, Florida, one of five locations in the US that provide proton therapy. Research shows proton therapy to be the most successful form of radiation for chordoma, although there are many side effects and risks involved.
Although she does have insurance, it does not cover everything. Karen will have to have daily treatments in Florida for two months or more, and will have to have continual MRI’s to closely monitor the cancer cells for the rest of her life. The loss of her eye has left her unable to work and unable to drive, but has not tarnished her spirit.

If you have never met Karen, I cannot adequately describe to you how truly amazing she is. She is my sister, my hero, and my best friend. She is a devoted wife, and loving mother of two sons, one of which has bravely managed Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 9. She is a caring daughter, and a faithful Christian. Most of all, she is a giver, always willing to help anyone - from her closest friends to a perfect stranger. She is currently facing the biggest battle of her life, and while we know we cannot change the disease, we can try to alleviate part of the financial burden and help her focus on WINNING her fight against cancer. It is therefore with hope and humility I am turning to our family and friends for help.
Thank you all for your donations, support, and most of all, your prayers. If you prefer to mail a check, please contact me via facebook or email ( for Karen’s mailing address.
