The family and friends of four year old Sadie Noel Absher are organizing this fundraiser to help her raise money for a FES RT300 bike

On August 30, 2009, three year old Sadie Noel Absher became paralyzed from the waist down within a matter of hours. Once a healthy and normal child, who loved to run and dance, could barely drag her body across the floor to get from place to place. Sadie spent six weeks in the hospital enduring numerous tests and therapies. Her diagnosis was Transverse Myelitis, which is a condition that causes inflammation to the spine. One of the several spinal taps Sadie had done, showed an increased level of the Epstein Barr virus, which is "MONO" for those of us that do not know what EBV is. For some strange reason, Sadie's body just didn't fight off the mono like you or me would have; resulting in the paralysis. Three weeks after coming home from the hospital, Sadie and her family traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to the International Institute of Spinal Cord Injuries at Kennedy Krieger. Numerous neurologists and therapists met with her and developed a plan of care to give her the best chance at walking again. Sadie regained the use of her left leg but her right leg remains paralyzed with little movements of her hip and toes. With intensive physical therapy every week Sadie's therapists told her that the recovery process could last up to two years plus. No one could tell the family what Sadie's future would be like. Sadie and her family also traveled to Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia twice this year to see several physicians and surgeons. They wanted to wait at least a year to give Sadie time to recover on her own. They will return to Shriners in March to reevaluate Sadie's progress.

On July 8th of this year, Sadie underwent a novel surgery at Johns Hopkins. This surgery had never been done before anywhere in the world. The surgery lasted six hours in which they took a branch of a nerve from her good leg and transferred it across her belly and into her paralyzed leg. Her neurologist is hoping that this will give her more function over time, but it may take 9-12 months before we can see any progress.

Her therapists began trialing her on the FES RT300 bike in January 2010. The functional electrical stimulation bike works by attaching electrodes to her legs and gently stimulating an electrical surge to initiate a contraction to her muscles. This type of therapy has been proven to increase the signal pathways to the area that is paralyzed, to ultimately "wake" up the sleeping muscle! We have seen some small contractions on Sadie's leg while she is using this bike and we believe this bike will help her achieve her goals of someday running faster than her big brother! Sadie is such a fighter with the determination of a giant and we have faith that God is going to provide the means for her to get this bike. We just pray that you will go along on this journey with us. This IS the day that God has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it...

Insurance does not cover the costs of the FES RT300 bike and we are trying to raise the money through this fundraiser. Any amount that you can donate will help Sadie. Please don't feel that your amount is too small. God can turn that dollar into thousands with lots of prayers! GO TEAM SADIE!

We have had some people express to us that they would rather donate by check. If this is you please make checks payable to Team Sadie and send to PO BOX 1062 Gastonia, NC 28053. Thanks to all and God Bless!!!
