Family and friends of Andrew Rhoads are coming together to raise money for vision equipment and medical expenses not covered by insurance.

Andrew is without a doubt the most outgoing seven-year-old you will ever meet. He has a heart bigger than the ocean with a personality to match. He loves Star Wars, The Avengers and playing Wii. He does everything a seven year-old boy would do, except he does it with a cane in his hand and a smile on his face, because Andrew is going blind.

Andrew came into this world 2 months early weighing in at 4 pounds 10 ounces. From the first moment we saw him, we knew that God had given us someone truly special. Despite being premature, Andrew was doing great. He was a very happy and healthy little boy. At the age of 4 things started to take a turn. Following a routine eye exam the doctor noticed that Andrew had some damage to the retina. On advice from him, we were sent to a Pediatric Ophthalmologist. Testing showed Andrew had Retinal dystrophy, an eye condition that deteriorates the retina over time causing various stages of blindness. However, we learned that retinal dystrophy does not occur on it's own. We were told Andrew needed to undergo further testing to get an accurate diagnosis. After several months, and several tests later Andrew was diagnosed with a very rare genetic condition called Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation.

CDG is a group of genetic disorders that can affect the liver, heart, blood and vision. It's because of CDG that Andrew is going blind. He is legally blind in the right eye and partially blind in the left. He also has total night blindness as well as low light blindness. This disease is very rare effecting less than 500 children worldwide. To date there is no known treatment or cure. Most children with CDG do not make it to their first birthday.

The simple fact that Andrew is 7 is truly a gift from God. We are doing this fundraiser to raise awareness about Andrew's condition and to ask for support. Whether support comes in the form of a monetary donation or with thoughts and prayers, all will be welcomed and greatly appreciated. Money that is raised will go towards getting Andrew low vision aids for the house. These include things like a Braille reader, Braille maker and a CCTV, (this magnifies print up to 50X). Donated funds will also go to help offset medical expenses not covered by insurance.  An example would be, co-pays for office visits, diagnostic testing, and visits to specialists such as the eye and genetic doctors.

Andrew is without a doubt amazing. He keeps a positive attitude and will lift us up if we are down. He loves to tell people that God gave him "special eyes" and that he can read with his hands. He inspires us to do better, to be better. He deserves every opportunity life has to offer. Please keep him and our family in your prayers. Whether a donation is big or small all will make a huge difference in Andrew's life.
