The family and friends of Zoë Wallen are uniting together to raise funds so that Zoë can begin a new, promising treatment against DIPG.

On March 27th, 2012, Zoë Wallen, will celebrate her 10th birthday. This is a very special and significant milestone in her life. At this time last year, doctors were doubtful that Zoë would live to see another birthday.

Zoë is battling a rare form of cancer known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). DIPG is an aggressive cancer that attacks the brainstem. Malignant cancer cells become entwined with healthy, life-sustaining brain tissue, making surgery impossible. Eventually, the cancerous tissue will overtake the healthy tissue, forcing the brain to shut down.

Last spring, Zoë underwent a six week course of radiation and chemotherapy at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Although her response to treatment was positive, doctors warned that her remission would be only temporary. Most children who undergo this treatment experience tumor regrowth within 6-9 months of therapy and only 30% of children survive the year. The five-year survival rate for children with DIPG is one percent.

Recently, Zoë’s family was informed of a new, experimental medication that may inhibit the growth of cancer cells. This medication is currently being used in FDA-approved clinical trials for which Zoë is a candidate. Although the cost of the medication is covered by the trial, the rest of her medical care is not. It is estimated that the family's out-of-pocket expense could exceed tens of thousands of dollars.

Therefore, we are launching a fundraising campaign in honor of Zoë’s 10th Birthday. The campaign is called, “$10 Grand for 10 Years” and we are hoping to raise a very large amount of money in a very short period of time.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 by March 27th. This money will enable Zoë to begin treatment without placing financial stress on her family. Also, in celebration of Zoë's birthday, we hope to shower her with birthday greetings. When you make your donation, please leave a birthday message for Zoë and we will include it on the biggest birthday card she has ever seen!

If you would prefer to donate via mail, you can send a check made out to the "Zoë Wallen Benefit Fund" to: Zoë Wallen, PO Box 1953, Springfield, Ohio 45501

Finally, we are strong believers in the power of prayer and we are convinced that it is the only reason Zoë is doing as well as she is. Please consider praying for Zoë and her family as they embark on this new treatment.
