The family and friends of Michelle George are gathering together to help her attain a hand transplant! Please show your support!

From Meshelly’s co-captain, Imei Hsu, RN, MAC, performance artist:

Give Meshelly A Hand
Michelle has been on my Twitter radar since 2009. She's a geeky DJ, a wife and mother, and an upper extremity amputee as result of an accident involving a fall on a rusty nail, ten days in a coma and multiple operations to try to save her life and her limb, resulting in an amputation of her hand due to a MSRA infection (, an invasive staph infection that is much more dangerous and life-threatening than your common, paper-cut borne infection.

The Need
While Michelle's life is no longer in danger, her future can be changed with your help. The Mayo Clinic notified her that she is a candidate for the hand transplantation program (we have documentation as proof of her candidacy). While Michelle has health benefits that cover 80% of the medical costs associated with surgery itself, she has a financial need associated with getting the surgery. The Mayo Clinic has provided her with a budget estimation sheet. We are looking into orgs that will donate or reduce her and her family’s costs but so far, I'm guestimating her real need to be close to $48,000 - $50,000 (we’ll update this for you) + 7% admin fee for GiveForward to keep fundraising free.

Many people do not know what is involved in a hand transplant surgery. Michelle found an excellent link if you’re interested in reading a detailed description, and viewing photographs from a real hand transplantation. In a similar process as organ donation, Michelle will be contacted when a donor is found. At that point, you don’t say, “No,” or “Can it wait because I haven’t raised all the funds.” You say, “Yes,” and you catch the next flight out, as the window of time to receive the donor hand is limited.

A Life-Changing Gift
In the wake of more earth-shattering and life-threatening situations across the world, Michelle and I are not wishing to campaign against your dollars for life-threatening crises and surgeries needed in other parts of the world. I only know that Michelle has been given a very rare opportunity -- less than 40 people in the world have had this surgery -- and she is prepared to “pay it forward” by allowing all donors to see her life post-surgery (therapy, returning to work, etc). Again, this is not a life-threatening surgery she is asking for your help, but a life-changing one. I am here to provide absolute transparency to the giving process, including a contingency plan should the donor process fail for any reason. We’ll be providing that information for you (likely through her FB causes page

Also, on October 15, 2011 6 - 9 pm PST, I’ll be hosting an Internet event on my channel, along with Michelle (we’ll get her on the phone listeners), so you can meet her online and get a sense of her journey. Please join us at the free event by logging on. Thank you for donating.
