Family and friends of Daniel are raising money to help with his eye treatment expenses not covered by insurance. Please show your support.

Daniel’s eyes

Daniel was diagnosed in December, 2010 with Keratoconus. Keratoconus is a disease of the eye that can significantly interfere with vision. Due to weakness the cornea becomes irregular in shape causing high levels of astigmatism. Normal corneas have cross-links between the collagen fibers that keep it strong and able to retain its normal shape. In keratoconus the cornea is weak with too few cross-links or support beams allowing the cornea to bulge out. It can progress to the point of making activities of daily living extremely difficult. The worst case scenario is a corneal transplant.
Glasses don’t correct vision for Keratoconus. Daniel has special contacts which are rigid in the center surrounded by a soft outer portion. Thankfully insurance covers these expensive contacts.
Daniel’s eyes have progressed since he was first diagnosed. There is a treatment called Collagen cross-linking which stops the progression of the disease and even improves vision in a good percentage of the patients who have had it done. It is available in other countries where patients have been followed for 8 or more years and they are still well. It is not yet FDA approved in the U.S. therefore insurance doesn’t cover it. There have been numerous studies done on adults for years but not children. We were recently directed to a study for children and Daniel has been accepted. Our insurance doesn’t cover the cost and we need help.
Daniel will be receiving the treatment soon. What else could we do for our son’s precious sight?
God bless you for any help you are able to give. It is appreciated more than you know.
