The Family & Friends of Joseph Hagon are reuniting to raise money to help Joey find his voice!

I am currently a Special Education Teacher who works with a nine year old non-verbal autistic boy name Joseph Hagon. Joey presents with severe receptive and expressive language delays secondary to a diagnosis of Autism which has become one of the most growing epidemics in our country. As many as one in 110 American children are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Boys are four more times likely to be diagnosed than girls are.
Joey has been nonverbal since he was an infant and has communicated both his wants and needs through gestures and the Dynavox Vmax, which is an Augmentative communication device. Since Joey cannot communicate to both his family and I basic things like what he wants, what hurts him, what he wants to eat, etc. it gets him very frustrated as well as us because we aren’t able to help him. Joey gets upset when he cannot communicate and he engages in self-injurious behaviors such as pinching himself and hitting his head.
Recently, with all of the technology that has come out for special need children, we truly believe that by getting Joey an Ipad all of his frustration and anxiety will decrease and eventually go away. The Ipad is a lot lighter than his Augmentative device and it offers so many different ways and forms of learning and communicating for Joey. It will be extremely beneficial for Joey because the Ipad has many different applications to offer so it could accommodate him. Joey has certain sounds and for the first time in 9 years he has started imitating words on demand. With the help of the Ipad and its wonderful programs we believe and have faith that Joey will extend his vocabulary and start speaking. Thank you all for your donations and support.
