Denise P. Smith was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer on 11/3/2010. Now an MRI showed spots in her brain. Lets support Denise!!

Denise Pachura Smith was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer on November 3, 2010. She is a good natured, kind hearted friend who has fought hard with grace and dignity. After intense chemotherapy, she underwent a mastectomy followed by radiation. She was just beginning to see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel as she finished up radiation last week, and was driving herself to a follow up appointment with her oncologist this week when she experienced some odd vision issues, including floaters and a 'curtain' affect in part of her line of vision. I tend to think that God was in control as it had not happened before, and really hasn't happened since - she arrived at the doctor's office and told him what had happened on the way, so he ordered an MRI of the brain, which she had Thursday night, 9/15/11. On Friday, 9/16/11, the oncologist called as she was shopping with her oldest daughter, and told her that the results 'were not good' and that the MRI 'showed spots on the brain'. This weekend has been difficult, to say the least, and she is looking forward to speaking with the oncologist more this coming week. He mentioned that her radiologist would be calling, and also that there is a trial being conducted at a local teaching hospital, and that he would be inquiring about that for her as well.

A dedicated Mom of two beautiful girls, Denise continued working as a dietician and being an active mom through much of her chemotherapy. At some point, the effects of the chemo were just too hard on her, and she had to leave her job and friends at the hospital. She still keeps in touch with many of those coworker friends, and attends Lunch and Learn events with them as well.

Denise will learn more next week about what to expect. This blog was designed as a means for keeping her friends and family updated throughout this journey, and as a forum for friends to provide support to Denise. Please feel free to leave words of love and support, as Denise will be checking the blog often.

I took Denise to dinner and movie tonight. She amazes me. She plans to fight hard. She is a great friend, a loving Mom, and just a good person in general. She has a trip planned to Arizona and has been so excited that she would be seeing her family. She has been looking forward to reconnecting with cousins. She is very proud of her daughers...Alyssa is a freshman living on campus at UNCG, and Danielle is in the 10th grade (she happens to be one of my daughter's very best friends...we call her my 'other' daughter). They need all the love and support we can provide - together, we can make a difference!
