To help our family travel to St. Louis to be with Jason for 10 days during his Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery.

Jason is a twin born February 13, 2004 9 weeks premature weighing in at 3 lbs. 12 oz.  Jason spent 1 month in the NICU at St. Petersbug's All Children's Hospital.  During his first few days of life, during routine testing an ultrasound was done on his head indicating that he had a level 2 brain hemhorrage.  At that time we did not know he was going to be challenged with Cerebral Palsy.

At 17 months old after months of wondering why he wasn't walking as most children his age should be we scheduled an appointment with his pediatrician.  Once we spoke with the pediatrician and confirmed our suspisions of Cerebral Palsy, we took Jason to a Neurologist where his Cerebral Palsy was confirmed as Spastic Diplegia.

Through the years, Jason has been through intense physical therapy and used different walking aids such as Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO's) and a Walker.  With much success, he has improved but he now has an opportunity of a lifetime!

Jason was recently approved for a surgical procedure called a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR).  This procedure requires our family to travel to St. Louis MO and be performed by a world renouned Neurosurgeon, Dr. Park.

During the procedure, Dr. Park will go through Jason's spine and sever the nerves to Jason's lower extremities releasing the tightness that he experiences which cause him difficulty in moving including, walking, running, bike riding, and even playing sports.

After the SDR Jason will have months (and possibly years) of intense physical therapy to rebuild and reteach his body to move properly.  However, this is the best opportunity that Jason has to perform daily tasks that we all take forgranted!

Our family is fortunate enough to have the surgical procedure primarily covered by insurance, but there are still many costs involved in traveling this far from our home to have the operation performed.  The costs involved include, hotel, airfare, food, prescriptions, and deductibles for approximately 10 days while Jason is in the hospital recovering from his procedure.
