The friends of Kerri Murphy are uniting to raise money to help with her battle against stage four appendiceal cancer. Thank you!

We want to share the story of an amazing woman who is close to our hearts. She is using her physical, mental, and spiritual strength to fight a serious battle for her health. She shows those around her how physical and mental fitness help you not just survive but thrive in adversity.

Kerri Murphy, owner/instructor at The Fitness Studio, Dudley, MA, is a bright light of amazing energy, strength, optimism and inspiration to her members and staff of instructors; her vitality and enthusiasm for her life and work light up a room. Her energy is contagious. She has shown us all the true meaning of strength, determination, and courage. Kerri is just 42 years old, a single mom of 3 children, a business owner, generous community member, wonderful friend, and a woman battling a rare form of cancer.

In March of 2012, a rapid growing tumor appeared in her abdomen, requiring major abdominal surgery in May 2012. Post surgery, she was told that she had appendiceal cancer and that of the 5 forms of this cancer she has the most aggressive form. A few short weeks after her first surgery, she required a second surgery which kept her in the hospital for over 2 weeks with only IV nutrition. Kerri is now 6 months post cancer diagnosis and multiple abdominal surgeries. She was able to return to running her business from the desk a week after her hospital stay. She started teaching spin and BodyPump a few weeks after that with her chemo pump attached. She returned to teaching Body Combat and Body Step by the end of September. When asked how she is handling her illness, she bluntly replies "cancer sucks". She refers to time at the hospital for her chemo infusions as time at "the spa" where she has severe rosacea and a side of hair loss. While it sounds funny (and is meant to be because she loves that humor relieves the tension some people have around her now) she firmly believes the side effects mean she is winning the war in her body. She recently said "My whole life I have been in training and I didn't even know it. Some people train for competition, some people train to look good and some people train to beat cancer. You never know what you are training for so keep on training! One thing is for sure, you will never regret being fit and strong."

She finished 5 months of chemotherapy at Halloween. She hoped to qualify for another abdominal surgery (HIPEC) to attack head on the multiple tumors still in her abdomen. Her surgeon opened her up on November 19th and decided another 4 month round of chemo was necessary before this procedure could be considered again in March 2013. Through all of this, she continues to teach 17 classes a week at her gym, often times with a chemo bag attached to her waist. Her mental toughness keeps her positive and smiling in the face of fear and anxiety. Kerri Murphy our dear friend, an inspirational hero and the strongest woman we know.

When someone is fighting a battle against cancer, they should not have to worry about the medical expenses and loss of business revenue that multiply on a daily basis. Kerri has never asked for help, but we feel it is important to take as much financial stress off her plate as possible so she can continue to focus on her treatment.
