I am running the San Francisco U.S. Half Marathon at 7am on November 7th, 2010 to raise awareness and research funds for endometrial cancer research through the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation.

Thank you for checking out my page! I have wanted to run a half marathon to raise money and awareness for gynecological cancer research for a couple years now, and I am very excited to finally do it. I am training for the San Francisco U.S. Half Marathon independently, rather than through an organized program, so that I can donate proceeds to a cause that gets very little mainstream publicity.

Gynecological cancers (ovarian, cervical, uterine, tubal, vaginal, and vulvar cancers) are more deadly than breast cancer, and they account for about 14% of women’s cancers. However, they get relatively little publicity or research funding due to stigma attached to the female reproductive system and sexuality. This lack of awareness results in women not knowing the symptoms to watch for, and gyn cancers not being caught until they have already metastasized.

When my mom was diagnosed with a gynecological cancer in 2007, it had already developed into stage 4b metastasized undifferentiated endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS). Her type of cancer is extremely rare – it accounts for only 0.05% of female cancers. But like many women diagnosed with gynecological cancers, my mom had never even heard of this disease before she was diagnosed, and wasn’t aware of the symptoms. While she is now disease-free after undergoing surgery, radiation, and rounds of chemotherapy, she still has to have PET scans every 3 months to make sure it doesn’t return.

My mom belongs to ESS message boards, where she provides support and education for newly-diagnosed women. The common threads running through these women’s posts are hope for promising clinical trials, and maintaining the belief that they will defy statistics. If gynecological cancer survival statistics are to improve, we need to do two things:
1. Educate ourselves, moms, grandmothers, sisters, and friends about gyn cancer symptoms. You can find a list of symptoms here: and and also at
2. Donate to the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF), which is the only national organization dedicated to the eradication of all gynecological cancers. The GCF will use allocate donations to research, education, awareness, prevention, early detection, and early treatment. 100% of donations given to my run will go to the GCF.
3. Spread the word!
