Roland Stubbman, an active and longtime member of the Montauk Community since 1968, is afflicted with a rare disease know as Guillain Barre Syndrome. This auto immune condition is triggered by a virus that paralyzed him from his shoulders to his feet this past January.

He spent 9 weeks in Stony Brook ICU before being transferred to a physical rehabilitation facility in Smithtown where he currently resides. Roland has a severe strain of the disease, called Axonal, which has destroyed his nerve sheath and inner core. Because of this, his rehabilitation will require a prolonged period of time. Despite the fact that his level of recovery is unknown, he has made remarkable progress to date.

Roland is a husband to Helen and father to Alison. He is a builder by profession and enjoys surfing and sailing.

On Saturday, August 13 the East end Foundation will sponsor the annual Rell Sunn Surfing Contest at Ditch Plains, followed by an auction and raffle prizes. For the past 13 years the proceeds from this event have been donated to the families with hardships on the east end of Long Island NY. This year the monies raised will help Roland's family cope with some of the catastrophic expenses associated with his illness.
