The family and friends of Billie Sikes are uniting to raise money to help with her heart transplant expenses. Please show your support!

UPDATE 04/09/2012

Just wanted to give everyone an update. My mom is doing well. The surgery went really good. We met with the surgeon this morning. He said she did good and she got a beautiful heart! She is now in ICU. She will stay there for about a week, after which she will go to a room on the heart floor.

We have been back to see her a couple of times. She has opened her eyes, acknowledged us, and tried to communicate with us. Hopefully, she will be able to be taken off of the ventilator tomorrow. Her nurse did say she is trying to get a fever. So, please continue to keep her in your prayers.

Thank you all for your prayers and support.

UPDATE 04/07/2012

We finally got the call we have been waiting for 8 months to receive. They have a heart for my mom! We are currently sitting in Gainesville, FL waiting for her heart transplant! Please keep mama, her heart transplant team and our family in your prayers. I will post more later.

Can you imagine looking at your computer screen, reading a book, or watching TV, but not seeing anything? You are blind!! What a very scary moment.

Well, on May 19, 2001 that is exactly what happened to my mom, Billie Ruth Booth Sikes. On that day, she suffered a stroke which first caused her to become blind. This was just the beginning of her struggles. With God’s hand, her eyesight gradually returned. She now has a pacemaker and a mechanical mitral valve. She has congestive heart failure and the right side of her heart is mostly dead.

Just recently, she was placed on the heart transplant list at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. She is currently wearing a portable defibrillator (Life Vest) and a PIC line in her arm that delivers an IV infusion medication that helps her heart to pump more efficiently.

Our family has been told we have to raise funds to help with the cost of the transplant. The pre-transplant expenses for medications, food, gasoline, and lost wages have already become a hardship for us. The post-transplant expenses will be extremely high with the medications, food, lodging for 3 months, and the cost of someone to stay with her in Gainesville after discharge from the hospital for approximately 3 months.

“The road to recovery is long and filled with regular biopsies, immunosuppressant drugs, and a high risk of rejection. The average cost per year for these follow up procedures and medications can range from $100, 000 to over $130, 000 for the rest of their life”.

We need financial assistance from anyone who will be so kind as to help our family during this time of hardship. We will be thankful for each and every donation no matter how small or big.

This page has been setup for those who wish to donate online. However, if you wish for your donation to be tax deductible, we have a foundation which will accept all donations. You will receive a thank you letter which you can use as a receipt for tax purposes. Please make your check payable to: Heart Transplant Fund and mail to:
