Update: June 12, 2012

Three weeks ago I began my first attempt a organizing a fundraiser. Since then a lot has happened; I completed my ride with 45 minutes to spare. We raised around $6000 to help Brenda pay off the continuing medical expenses. About 20 people from Transmatic showed up at their home on Saturday June 2 and spent the day doing chores. And, sadly, Jeff passed away on Thursday, June 7.

Brenda wanted me to pass this along; “Our family is so grateful and feels so Blessed by the kindness of so many wonderful people. Folks both known and unknown to us; Praying, helping, making donations! We all feel (as did Jeff) very touched by the love! Thank you!”

I am humbled by the number of people who participated, not only in donations but in support and encouragement. When I started this thing I was hoping that the cost of the trip would not be more than the amount of the donations. I guess I didn’t need to worry. I have a bit of a skeptical nature and I have learned a lot about myself and how faith can change ones’ outlook.

The fundraiser is coming to a close, no more motorcycle tricks; Even though Jeff has moved on, the bills will keep coming for quite some time. I will keep the RideForJeff account at Huntington open for a few more months to accept donations and memorials. The GiveForward site will go until the end of the June.

Despite the difficult times Brenda and the kids have had over the past couple of years, I think the biggest challenges are yet to come. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they transition into a new phase of their lives.

Sincerely and thankfully,

Update: June 9, 2012. Taken from the CarePages website, written by Brenda:
"Dear friends, our hearts are both sad and glad to share with you the news of Jeff's passing. Sad, for so many obvious reasons and yet glad because Jeff is expeirencing a Peace that he has not known for some time"

Jeff passed away in his own bed surrounded by family on the evening of June 7 2012.

This is a fundraiser for Jeff VanderWege's Medical expenses as he continues his 2 1/2 year battle with cancer.

The VanderWege family; Jeff and Brenda have been married over 30 years. Chase, and the twins; Brianna and Drew are also in the picture.

We all pretend that only Jeff is fighting cancer, the truth is; the whole family is fighting with him.

As with all diseases, the recovery process has it's ups and downs. After his most recent round of treatment Jeff will be dependent on in-home care, which consists of his wife, Brenda, for the time being. Pending changes in insurance are going to more than double the toll on their already overloaded finances.

Me, being of sound body and semi-sound mind, decided to help them out by riding a motorcycle to a far away place.
My goal is to raise money for the VanderWege's by turning this ride into a fundraiser. I will attempt to ride a motorcycle from Zeeland to Rifle Colorado in less than 24 hours.

The ride will be 1500 miles in 24 hours or less. I will be following all of the Iron Butt Association (IBA) rules to certify the ride. This is not about riding fast or dangerously. Quite the opposite, the IBA will not certify a ride if they believe it was unsafe. I have been a member of the IBA for several years and long-ish motorcycle rides are something I have experience with. The route I chose will go through Indianapolis and St Louis, across Kansas and a few hundred miles past Denver.
