The family and friends of young Eli Olsen are uniting to raise money to help pay for his emergency islet cell transplant surgery.

With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients. In Escondido, volunteers are raising funds for transplant patients like local boy, Eli Olsen.

Eli is the son of Roy and Deanna Olsen. Born on December 13, 2002, Eli was diagnosed with hereditary pancreatitis, celiac disease and a Cystic Fibrosis Gene Carrier at the age of 3. In the last 1.5 years Eli has had over 10 pancreatitis episodes and in the last 4 months Eli has not been able to eat forcing him to be sustained through a feeding tube in his chest.

He also deals with chronic and at times excruciating pain that can only be managed by narcotics. Yet, he still smiles and plays as much as he can, just like any other 9 year old boy. His perseverance and positive attitude have been an inspiration to so many people.

The doctors at University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, have recommended a life-saving islet cell transplant. An estimated $500,000 is being raised by Escondido, CA and Washington volunteers.
