We are trying to raise money to pay for our awesome dog's vet bills. He has IMHA and is a new diabetic. Please help if you can!

A little over a month ago, my awesome dog Stewart began acting strangely. He wasn't there to greet us at the door, he was disinterested in toys, and he stopped eating and drinking. I took him to his vet who took one look at his gums and said to take him immediately to the ER at the Angell Animal Medical Center (an amazing facility) because he was dangerously anemic. At Angell, he was stabilized and diagnosed with Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Basically, his immune system had begun attacking his red blood cells. They started him on an aggressive treatment of blood transfusions, steroids to suppress his immune system, antibiotics to fight infection due to his now weakened immune system, and other medicine to prevent blood clots. A couple days later, we took him home to continue his treatment with pills and a series of follow up visits.

Just when we thought the ordeal was almost over, we learned that the steroids had made him diabetic. We started to wean him off the steroids, give him daily insulin injections, and we monitored him even more closely. Things started to get back to normal again, but a week and a half ago, he started losing interest in his food, and then he collapsed while out on a walk. We rushed him back to Angell, where he stayed for a week of more tests, IVs, transfusions, and much more medicine. His IMHA and his Diabetes combat one another. Once you start treating the Diabetes, the IMHA starts to get worse and vice versa. After a week, his doctors started seeing results and felt they had found the correct balance of treatments. He came back home, and he seems back to his old self.

If you've ever had a pet, I'm sure you can understand how special Stewart is to my girlfriend and I. He is a part of our family and we would do anything to keep him feeling happy and well. If you've had a pet, I'm sure you also know that vet bills are very expensive. 30-80% of dogs die from IMHA, largely because the treatment is so expensive and the owners decide to put their dogs to sleep. Stewart is almost 9, and I know he has a lot of life left in him. He wasn't suffering and I could tell that he wasn't ready to go.

My budget has been stretched pretty thin since being laid off last year, but I was not going to let that stop me from getting my buddy the care he needed. We both took out additional lines of credit with the vet to cover his bills. Between the two of us, we have racked up $10,000 in debt to pay for Stewart's treatment. Now that he's stable and we can focus more on paying it back, we are here asking for some help. I know how rough it is these days, but if you can spare anything, it would mean a great deal to us.

Our goal is to raise half; any additional funds will continue to go to his bills until he is completely in the clear, and anything beyond that will be donated to Angell. As an additional incentive, for every $100 donated, I will volunteer an hour to Angell. Please donate if you can, and pass this page on to your friends.
