Haily Peterson is a 21 year old battling a rare breast cancer. Help her by making a donation to ease the burden of medical bills.

My name is Haily Peterson, I am a 21 year old Visual Arts major at North Dakota State University. I have a rare type of breast cancer called a Secretory Carcinoma. I had originally went into the doctor's office when I found a lump in my right breast. I spoke with many doctors whom told me that it was a fibroadenoma (a non-cancerous tumor). I had the tumor removed and the pathology showed that the tumor was actually cancerous. The cancer looked different than most and was sent to world specialists in Boston whom diagnosed it as a Secretory Carcinoma.

Only 1.4 in every 100,000 women ages 20-24 gets breast cancer and only 1 in every 10,000 breast cancers is a Secretory Carcinoma. There is little information gathered on this type of cancer because there is not enough people that have it to conduct proper studies. Much of the information on the internet is not accurate because they are based on only a few individual cases so generalizations about the cancer can not be made.

As far as treatment goes, I have had a lumpectomy, some of my eggs matured and frozen so I can have children in the future because the chemotherapy and radiation will make me sterile. I had a mastectomy done on my right breast as well as a lymph node biopsy and removal on the right side and arm pit because the cancer had spread out of my breast and into my sentinel lymph node. I also had a port placement surgery before I started chemo that implanted a port near my collar bone in one of my veins. The port is used to administer the chemotherapy as well as draw blood for lab tests before each chemo treatment.

I am currently recieving chemotherapy for 20 weeks.  The first 8 weeks will be two different chemo medications that will be given every other week.  A third type of chemothraphy that will be given every week for 12 weeks will complete the 20 week chemo treatment.

Once the chemo is completed I will have radiation treatments every day for 6 weeks.

The radiation will complete the cancer treatment and a year afterward I will be able to start the process of having reconstruction done which will be a series of surgeries.  First an inflator will be placed where my right breast was.  It will then be filled with saline and streched over the course of three months.  After that an implant will replace the expander and then a lift and reduction will be performed on the left breast in order to help the two breasts match.

I am remaining a student at NDSU throughout this entire process because it is important to me to keep my normal life-style by continuing with my classes and art studios.

It's going to be a long road but hopefully when all is said and done it will just be a bump in the road for me. I sincerely appreciate the support of my family, boyfriend and friends, you have all been wonderful and it is great to know how much positivity I have surrounding me.

The medical bills are very expensive and have placed a huge burden on my family. I created this fund raiser in order to help my parents pay for my surgeries and treatments. Your support is more than greatly appreciated.

I make youtube videos to keep anyone up-to-date on my life and the treatment process.  I've pretty much made a video every step of the way so you'd like to view any of those you can go to

Also, I have a CaringBridge website that I update if you would like to keep up to date on my cancer and the treatment process via writing instead of  videos- however I do the videos much more often. It is....
