Vincent Camilleri, Carpenter, Hiker, Bee Keeper

Vincent Francis Camilleri, 55, of Barnardsville, NC, died March 9, 2010 at Four Seasons Hospice, Flat Rock, NC from a brain tumor.

Vincent was born on February 24, 1955 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Louis and Frances Gerbino Camilleri.  Following graduation from New Utrecht High School in 1973, he attended The Cooper Union School of Art.  The early years of his art education were the foundation for his artistic vision in historic restoration and landscape design.

After college Vincent moved to rural central Maine where his first son, Arian, was born. Here he started a successful construction company and developed his love of old houses. An avid reader, he studied building construction, sustainable agriculture and natural history by seeking out the best books available.

Before moving to Asheville, NC in 2000 Vincent was in demand as a renovation contractor in Savannah’s historic district. Because of his keen eye and exacting standards, he served the most discriminating clients. Vincent won awards for building construction and renovations in Portland, ME, Hilton Head Island, SC, Savannah, GA, and Asheville, NC.

A member of the Appalachia Trail Conservancy, Vincent loved to hike and camp in the mountains of Western North Carolina.  Vincent hiked sections of the Appalachian Trail and visited the entire trail in spirit through all the books he read on the subject. He would have hiked the whole trail were it not for the lack of hot showers along the way.

Several years ago, Vincent became a beekeeper. He was constantly concerned about his bees and especially proud of the honey his bees made. Vincent believed that beekeeping was integral to the rural living he valued so much.

Vincent was a supporter of the arts and an avid fan of jazz musician Pat Metheny. A devoted Methaniac, he collected all Pat’s music and traveled to hear him live on every tour possible.

Surviving are his father, Louis Camilleri of Hilton Head Island, SC, his wife, Cynthia White Camilleri, two sons, Arian Camilleri of Brooklyn, NY, and Alexander Camilleri of the home, sister, Anne Casino and her husband, Gary of East Brunswick, NJ and countless friends.
