Fundraiser for Anuradha Mitra's continuing medical treatment and for her family to be by her side during this unimaginable time.

On the evening of November 21st 2011, our beloved Anu was hit by a car as she was walking to the bus stop after work. Anu suffered from severe brain trauma, a broken femur, pelvis and orbital socket. Anu was rushed to the hospital and immediately underwent a craniectomy to reduce the dangerous swelling in her brain. She was not expected to make it through the night because the extent of her brain injury was so severe, but she did.

Over the next few days her prognosis was so poor the doctors didn't expect her to make it through that first week, but she did. Over the next few weeks the doctors didn't expect Anu to show any brain activity, but she did. The doctors said that Anu would never wake up, but she did. On New Year's Eve, I watched as the nurse asked Anu to show us her thumb, and she did. The nurse asked Anu to squeeze her hand, and she did. From day one, Anu has proven doctors and medical science wrong, and continues to do so each and every day.

Though I have no doubt in my mind that Anu will be that bubbly, happy, smiley, full-of-life girl again we all love so dearly, her road to recovery is going to be a long one. Anu is fighting for her life every day, and both her and her family need our help for Anu to continue to get the medical care she needs, and allow the family to be by her side every step of the way. Please help support Anu and her family to get our beloved Anu back.

Being from Calcutta, India, it took almost 2 weeks for both her parents who had never been to the United States before to get their Visas and be able to come to their daughters side. Fortunately Anu's sister who had just begun her PhD in Atlanta was closer by and was able to catch the first plane in that next morning, and hasn't left her side since. Even Anu's good friend who has only been in the United States a few months to start his PhD in Utah has flown in and stayed by her side since to support Anu and her family. Anu was attending Fresno State as a Masters student and was in San Diego on a summer internship. She enjoyed San Diego and the company she was working for so much she decided to stay longer and complete her Master's project here at our work.

I first met Anu in May when she started as an intern in the research and development department. I started out as her Mentor in the lab, but in no time at all our professional relationship turned into a friendship, and Anu became my closest friend. Often times after work we would go to her favorite pizza place near her apartment for pizza and her newly discovered taste for apple cider. We would often hang out with our other friend from work, Kandee, and were referred to as "The Three Amigos". The last time the 3 of us were together was for my birthday in November when Anu and Kandee took me out to a wonderful brunch and fun-filled time watching Harold and Kumar in 3D. We had plans to take Anu iceskating for her Birthday on Coronado Island where they have an outdoor iceskating rink with an ocean view. Instead it was spent decorating her hospital room and reading her all her friends Facebook posts for her birthday. She has now spent Thanksgiving, her 26th birthday, Christmas, and New Years in the hospital. Let's make sure she doesn't have to spend any more holidays in that room. We love you Anu. We know you are going to get through this, and none of us are going anywhere until you do. Can't wait to see that beautiful smile of yours again.

Hugs for We Love You Anu.

Progress...

May 2nd, 2012

Hi everyone!

I am way overdue on sending out an update about Anu's condition so please accept my apologies for the delay.  I've been much better at updating her Facebook group about her status but not all of you are on there so I wanted to be sure to update those who aren't as well.  Anu has been continuing to make incredible progress in the last couple months since the last update I sent out and she just continues to blow doctors, nurses, and everyone who loves her away.  About 6 weeks ago Anu said goodbye to her feeding tube which was the last and only machine that she was hooked up to.  Now she is able to be fed soft foods and drink fluids and is no longer on any machines whatsoever!  She is continuing to do speech and physical therapy daily and usually exhausted from all her hard work by the end of the day.  I actually tried visiting her in the afternoon yesterday with a couple of her friends from work but she was peacefully sound asleep.  Her parents said that she is now starting to sit up on her own without any support and has gone from starting at 1 minute to 15 minutes now.  They will continue to increase her time more and more as she rebuilds her strength.  They also said that she has started to smile at her nurses when they come in the room.  I can't wait to go back and visit her so I can see this in person.  One of the things I miss most about her is the amazing smile that she always had from ear to ear.  I know it's just a matter of time before we see that smile again.

Anu is still at the Scripps hospital and awaiting insurance details to get worked out before she can be transferred to the rehab hospital where she will get even more therapy and have a new set of nurses to blow away.  I'm sure the next time I write I will have even more amazing news to share.  Thank you so much everyone for your never-ending love and support.  I don't have words to express how moved I am by each and every one of you.

Until the next update,
Gabby

Slowly but surely...

February 24th, 2012

Hello everyone! It's been a little while since I've sent out an update so I just wanted to let everyone know how Anu is doing lately. She has had surgery to put in the prosthetic bone flap that has been out since just after the accident first happened. The incision is healing nicely so far and she will remain at the hospital for 4 to 6 more weeks to make sure it is healed properly. From there she will be transported to a Rehabilitation hospital where she will begin physical/occupational/speech therapy. From what the doctors have said it looks like it will take about 6 months to a year in rehab for Anu to fully recover from the injury. All that matters is that she WILL recover!!! Anu was really tired when I visited her in the hospital earlier this week, but she woke up when I arrived and I spent a long time talking with her and holding her hand. She was squeezing my hand so hard that I had to pry her little hand off when the nurse came in and I needed to move! Her family said they hadn't seen her try to talk as much as she did when I was talking with her. There were numerous times that she was trying to speak while I was there were her, especially when I was talking about work and all the things I couldn't wait to do with her again when she is better. Some really good news is that Anu has now been able to start waiving and has waived to her friends and nurses! It takes her some time to put her arm up, but nontheless I saw her waive to her nurse as she was leaving the other night and she waived bye to me. So incredible! The fundraiser has been doing great and I'm so thankful to each and every one of you. It's really more than I can put into words. We held a fundraiser at work for Anu and her family about 3 weeks ago during the Farmer's Insurance Golf Tournament and raised almost $4000 in one weekend! We gave the cash directly to the family to use for living expenses so that's not even included in the total that we've raised on GiveForward! I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we don't care how long it takes, we just can't wait to get Anu back. Thank you again everyone! -Gabby

Amazing News

January 18th, 2012

Hi everyone,

Some of you might know already from Anu's Updates/Status Facebook page, but for those of you who don't I wanted to share some incredible news we received yesterday.  For the first time since the accident happened, Anu's neurosurgeon has said that the chance of Anu having a full recovery is now a definite possibility.  He said her road to recovery will take at least a year, but was very happy to say that she is indeed on the right track.  Thank you everyone for not losing hope in our precious Anu.

We knew you could do it Anu.  We never stopped believing in you.  We love you Anu!!!

Fundraising Progress

January 9th, 2012

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to take a minute to thank each and every one of you for your generous donations.  We are almost at $10,000 and the fundraiser hasn't even been going for a full week yet!!!  It has been so incredibly touching to see the amazing people Anu is surrounded by - both here in her temporary home in San Diego to across the world to her permanent home in India.  It is obvious how much Anu has touched all of our lives.  I feel honored to be connected to each and every one of you, even if I don't know you personally.

As for Anu's status, she is completely off the ventilator for the second time, and hopefully this time for good.  She is still in the ICU but will most likely be transferred to a different part of the hospital soon since she doesn't need the ventilator anymore.  Little by little Anu seems to becoming more coherent and active.  It may be a long road to recovery for her, but she is definitely on the right path.  She continues to defy the odds each day.  Let's keep up the amazing work fighting for Anu as Anu fights this battle.  We are all going to win when we have our Anu back.

Thank you again,
-Gabby
