The Sydney and Kennedy Surgery Expense Fund was created to assist with the mounting medical expenses for two special girls.

Imagine if both your children had to have surgery just ten days before Christmas. It's almost unthinkable, but it's the reality for my good friend whose daughter Sydney will need a bone graft on December 15th, 2011. It's considered an outpatient surgery so she will hopefully be home with her family the same evening.

Sydney is just 7, she was born with a cleft lip and palate and will be undergoing reconstruction of her mid-face and alverolar ridge using bone taken from her hip.

Unbelievably, Sydney's 11-year-old sister Kennedy will also need surgery on her foot on December 14th. This will be Kennedy's second surgery this year - she has a disorder which requires surgery and physical therapy in order to correct both feet. This is an overnight procedure - so as Kennedy checks out from the hospital, Sydney will be going in!

In addition to paying out thousands of dollars in health insurance premiums and copayments, Sydney and Kennedy's mom is also responsible for thousands more in deductibles and non-covered medical expenses. She is a single mother who is struggling to manage her mounting medical bills while working full-time and going to graduate school in the evenings. Since the Blue Cross/Blue shield will NOT pay a dime until Tanyia meets her deductible, she was required to pay the hospital 13,000 UP FRONT for Sydney's surgery. She will hopefully be reimbursed for this at some point within the next couple of months, but she needs to pay the $5000 deductible (which is not reimbursable) for this to happen.

Please consider giving something to help pay for Sydney and Kennedy’s medical expenses which include high deductibles ($5000 in 2011 alone), medication, specialist visits, orthodontia for Sydney and Physical therapy for Kennedy. This is an urgent need for this family right now which is why I have set the end date for this fundraiser as 1/31/12.

Update: Help me reach my first mini goal of $1500 by 12/14 (the date of Kennedy's surgery). Spread the word!

Surgery Time for Kennedy

December 14th, 2011

Kennedy went into surgery today at 10:00 a.m. (here's a picture of her kissing a dolphin pillow pet that I sent her). Tanyia said she was in good spirits and they are just waiting now. It was discovered through testing that Kennedy has an allergy to Morphine so I'm not sure what that means in terms of pain control, but they will be keeping Kennedy overnight. In the morning, Tanyia will be going through this again with Sydney.

This is a great time to support Sydney and Kennedy's Surgery Fund via a donation (if you haven't already) or please forward this on to your network and put the word out.

Prayers, thoughts, white light and well wishes are all welcome right now too!!

Sydney's Pre-Op Visit

December 7th, 2011

December 7, 2011: Sydney had her pre-operative visit yesterday (12/6/11) in preparation for her bone graft on the 14th. She is a healthy 44 pounds (that's big for Syd!) and mom Tanyia has told me that she's actually excited to get the surgery which will hopefully make her mid-face more pronounced. Sydney is at an age where she's very aware that her face looks different from other children (just like my daughter, Emily, who was also born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate). She's hoping this will make her nose look "just like mommy's!" This will be Sydney's sixth surgery since she was born and even though Tanyia is now a pro at getting through the stressful and heart wrenching experience of caring for a child during and after surgery, she is worried. Please keep the family in your thoughts this week and next - and do spread the word about this fundraiser. Sydney's surgery will cost over $13,000 - above the $5000 deductible that Tanyia is responsible for - so every dollar helps.

Tanyia- although we have never met, I have met your beautiful daughter Sydney mutliple times through a mutual friend. Wishing you and the girls the best this holiday season and will keep you in our prayers during this difficult time.
