1 1/2 year old, Jordan, is battling Leukemia. The funds will be used for Jordan's medical costs & related expenses not covered by insurance
Jordan's journey began on 10/24/10, when he was diagnosed with a bacterial bone infection in his leg. A few weeks later, on 11/8, we received the life-shattering news that our precious 16-month-old had leukemia.
We struggled to come to grips with this cruel and unfair reality. We never ever imagined that we'd have to tell anyone "Our little boy has cancer." And we’re still adjusting to the overwhelming, painstaking and emotionally/physically draining reality of managing Jordan's illness.
Thankfully, Jordan has responded well to all of the chemotherapy thus far and has been a trooper every step of the way.
However, it's the side effects (e.g., nausea, diarrhea and appetite loss), oral medicines (which he detests) and general isolation (at the hospital, outpatient clinic and at home) that have been torturous to him and us. Every single meal requires extensive cajoling, encouragement, and scolding to get him to take even a bite of solid food. Often, Jordan doesn’t take more than 15-20 ounces of milk and baby yogurt daily. He's also developed a gagging reflex. He cries because he wants to eat, but is afraid of throwing up. It pains us that our son can't fully communicate how he's feeling, where it hurts, and what he wants.
Jordan is affectionate and playful, but we need to be extra careful about our own hygiene, as well as that of any visitors. We’ve had to limit visitors because we can’t have him catching something while his immune system is seriously compromised. We’ve also had to limit public activities for his twin sister Kaitlyn because of the risk of her catching something that might endanger Jordan. He rarely gets out of the house for anything except clinic and hospital visits. We try hard to make home life fun and varied, but it’s exhausting.
All we can do is take it one day at a time. But make no mistake, we're determined to help Jordan beat this cancer and live a full, happy life. Our prayer is that Jesus will care for and heal Jordan completely.
We have health insurance, but it doesn't cover everything. And there are certain, expensive meds that aren't covered at all, which he'll have to take regularly until the end of his treatments -- which is 2/22/14. The financial burden of all this is already beginning to weigh down on us, and we're barely four months into his treatment. So it's with humility and hope that we turn to our family, friends and loved ones for support.

FUNDRAISER THANK YOU
April 5th, 2011
Dear Family, Friends, and Kind Supporters,
It's been said that thankfulness consists of words, but that gratitude consists of acts. The entire Nam family and Jordan are full of both because of your compassion and willingness to support Jordan in his battle with leukemia. Your personal commitment was incredibly helpful and allowed us to raise over $4,000 dollars, both through the raffle fundraiser and the outpouring of donations online.
100% of the funds will go to the Nam Family so they can use it for medical bills that are not being covered by insurance. Jordan still has a very long journey ahead of him but by sharing your love, you have allowed for Michelle and Wesley to be able to have less worries and be more focused on their beautiful baby boy. Your generous donations meant so much to all of us involved but mostly to Jordan and his family and the encouragement that you have shared! Michelle and Wesley will strive to show their ongoing gratitude by doing all that they can to help care for Jordan during this long journey. Thank you for making a difference, thank you for your prayers and for giving it forward! God Bless you all!
A special video thank you has been prepared, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnqpXwcvKK
With Great Gratitude,
The Nam Family & Super Jordan
Latest Update
March 27th, 2011
Hello everyone,
Jordan finished 2 rounds of the "intense methotrexate" chemo and has 2 more rounds left. Both times, he proudly took the chemo well and we were able to come home on the 4th day and reunite with Kaitlyn. However, after the 1st round, he suffered greatly from the terrible mouth sores that cover his lips and the inside of his mouth. He started saying "ayah" which means "ouch," telling me that he's in pain. This ripped my heart apart and I felt so helpless. J couldn't sleep, woke up with blood scabs from the sore, lost his voice completely and couldn't drink/eat a thing. We took him back to the clinic for some hydration and they gave him morphine. MORPHINE. It definitely comforted him but I felt so bad for him that he has to take one strong drug after another. A few days later, he didn't need anymore morphine and he was actually taking some solid foods.
Now, after the 2nd round of the same intense chemo, he hiked a fever during the hospital stay. He was isolated and of course he hated being "locked" in the room. We were expecting him to respond like he did to the 1st round but when he had the fever for 2 days we were worried and afraid. Thankfully, his fever went down by the 4th day and we were able come home. This time he didn't have any mouth sores but was still irritable and cranky and stopped drinking/eating again. He also had some blood in his stool so we called the clinic for advice. The doctor was saying that just because we don't see the mouth sores in his mouth/lips, it doesn't mean they're not there. Sometimes sores are in the small intestines or in the rectum. That's why I guess he had blood in his stool. So we gave him morphine again to ease the pain. Morphine again! That thing is strong. He's starting to be more himself these days and he took some food today beyond just milk/baby yogurt. He actually ate a whole waffle. YAY!!!!
With the weather being nice and Jordan feeling better, we want to make the most out of this weekend before his 3rd round, which is next week. Hopefully, his blood counts are high enough for him to continue this intense chemo and get closer to ending this phase.
Lately, I've been feeling really bad for Kaitlyn. As you can imagine, it's been hard caring for a sick child and trying to balance our time with Kaitlyn, who often times become the "forgotten one." I noticed that I'm not as tolerant and patient with Kaitlyn as I am with Jordan. I guess this has been going on for a while before I began to sense that K doesn't like me. Who would like a mom that yells at her but not at her brother, takes J's side most of the time and ask K to always share or give in. I was wrong to think that K is too little to know and that she is "ok" with being the "forgotten one." I need to do a lot more that what I've been doing. I need wisdom, strength and love.
When you pray for us, please don't forget Kaitlyn. She's just as affected by her brother's illness. And it's just like Wesley read in a NY Times article about a cancer survivor. Often, it's not just the afflicted person who needs to heal. The entire family also needs healing.
Thank you and good night!

"When our son was going thru treatment, he was 1 yr old. I reverted him back to a lot of lumpy puree to get more nutrition in him with less chewing. Anti-nausea around the clock - i found it was too late to give it by the time he starts showing symptoms of nausea. A lot of soups with noodles/rice. Oxtail broth, chicken soup. and beef bone soup. Also, for the few days that you do the drip, I made this green bean soup. You just boil the green bean until it pops open, then strain the beans so it's like a juice. Add a bit of sugar. I gave this to him the entire time he was going thru chemo and doctors said he showed astounding tolerance to the treatments. Please feel free to email me!"
