On October 11, 2009, a little over a year after discovering that she had bladder cancer and having her bladder removed during a radical cystectomy, Anna Strazzante will run the 26.2 miles of the Chicago Marathon to raise awareness of bladder cancer.
Cancer of the bladder is the fourth most common cancer among men and the eleventh most common cancer among women. There are about 71,000 new cases yearly, with approximately 14,000 deaths per year in the US.
Bladder cancer is almost always curable if detected and treated early, with a 5-year survival rate of more than 90%. However, advanced disease is much more difficult to treat.
The most common symptom of bladder cancer is blood in the urine. Other symptoms include frequent urination, strong urges to urinate and burning during urination. Visible blood in the urine should be considered cancer until proven otherwise and should always be evaluated by an urologist.
