Please show your support and join us in our effort to raise funds for Tim Popp's care

On February 18th, 26-year-old Tim Popp was playing with his 18-month old daughter when he suddenly collapsed to the floor & passed out. He felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his left chest area & could not breathe. He immediately went to the emergency room at Alexian Brothers Hospital where he was sent home later that day with some medications. Tim has felt this chest pain for the past 3 years; however it has gone away within a couple of days after a visit from the E.R. After a few days, the chest pain & wheezing got unbearable; the medications did not seem to work this time. He returned to Alexian Brothers where he was immediately admitted.

Tim was at Alexian Brothers for 3 ½ weeks before he was eventually transferred to Rush University Medical Center. The doctors thought this was the best decision since they referred to him as a “puzzle” & his wheezing as “uncommon”. He was discharged from Rush 5 days later. Less than 24 hours, his symptoms worsened again & returned to Alexian Brothers. He was there for an additional week.

During the course of his 5-week hospital stay, he was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura), causing his platelets to drop over a 4-day period to as low as 12,000, causing visible bruising. He went through 3 IVIG transfusions & 2 blood transfusions of platelets. His platelets still continue to erratically jump from high to low weekly. Tim was also diagnosed with VCD (Paradoxial Vocal Cord Disorder) & larengeal spasm, causing the irregular & “uncommon” wheezing & panic attacks. This also makes swallowing bite-sized foods and liquids very difficult as his family must do the Heimlich manuever at least twice a day on Tim. However, the doctors are still uncertain what is causing his chest pain. He has had 5 nerve block procedures, which have not helped alleviate the pain. He recently has had increasing headaches, blurred vision, shortness of breath & jaw pain. Increased dizziness throughout the day makes walking difficult, as he has multiple falls daily, causing blackouts with trauma to the head and bruised ribs.

During the past 3 months, it has been overwhelming, stressful & terrifying. He is currently not allowed to return to work at Cook County Sheriff's Department. He is now on disability, only receiving 50% of his monthly income. Tim cannot watch his 18-month alone, let alone be by himself. With the amount of pain & discomfort he is in, along with the high dosage of medications that still make it difficult to control his comfort level, Tim cannot function normally.

Insurance has recently denied coverage for tests & procedures that his doctors have recommended & find vital to his diagnosis. Insurance believes there is not enough medical reasoning for these tests to be performed, therefore doctors are providing inadequate care. Furthermore, four of Tim's doctors have recommended that he should travel to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, which insurance states they will not cover as well. It is frustrating knowing there is something wrong, yet we are unable to find any answers because of the financial burden.

So it's with humility and hope that we turn to our family, friends and loved ones for support. We are asking that if you are able to, please make a donation to help offset the medical costs that his family have endured and will continue to during this difficult time. While we don't know what the total expenses will be, we do know that your generosity will go a long way to alleviate any additional stress that these costs may provoke so that Tim & his family can focus all of their energy and strength on searching for a quick road to recovery.

We have no doubt that Tim WILL beat this! Your continued thoughts and prayers are always welcome and much appreciated.

Thank you and feel free to spread the word to anyone and everyone you think may be interested in supporting Team Popp! Every little bit helps!

Hugs for Team Popp.

Last chance to donate to the team popp online fund

August 26th, 2011

We would like to extend much gratitude and love to everyone for your love, generosity and prayers. We cannot thank you all enough for helping us to relieve the finance burden that has been accumulating the past 6 months and that continues to do so. Tim will be returning to Mayo Clinic on Sept 6, but this time in Minnesota. We ask that you continue to pray for our family that we may be able to find a diagnosis and that Tim can return to a normal life with his family pain-free. The online fundraiser on giveforward.com will be ending on august 31. Any last minute donations are appreciated this weekend so that Tim will be able to travel and help the doctors perform all the tests and procedures that insurance refuses to cover. Even though this has been a difficult and frustrating time, Tim and I feel truly blessed. We send our love to all.

Update 8.2.11

August 2nd, 2011

We just want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their gracious generosity. Words cannot express how blessed we are to have such amazing friends, family & strangers to show such a generous amount of love & support to our little family. We appreciate all the kind words, prayers & blessings, as well. It definitely helps us to stay positive and strong during this difficult time.

The fundraiser at Fox and Hound was a huge success. We raised $7200; all went towards medical bills, living expenses & a savings for Tim's trip back to Mayo Clinic in September. A special thank you to those you took the time to make the fundraiser possible: Jacqui LaBrose, Laura Rogner & Jamie Janeczko. That special night has relieved so much financial stress & burden; we are so forever grateful to everyone.

Again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  With everyone's continued generosity, we will be able to eventually erase all of Tim's medical debt, support Tim's return trip to Mayo so that we may find the difficult answers to all his health issues & bring him to better health once again.

With Much Love - The Popp Family - Tim, Sara & Hailey

7.20.11

July 20th, 2011

We would like to take the time to express our deep appreciation for everyone's generosity.  We hope to see everyone this Saturday, July 23 at Fox and Hound for Tim's fundraiser. More information can be found on the main page.

A little update:

Tim will be returning to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota during the first week of September. We will be finishing up appointments in Chicago with a specialty doctor in epilepsy, as well as a different neurologist and endocrinologist.

For those of you who might be unaware, we have been let go of our current lease and forced to be out by August 1st.  Because of the tight income right now, we were unable to keep up with payments. We ask everyone to keep us in your prayers and to continue to spread the word about Team Popp.

Update 7.8.11 - Return to Alexian Brothers Medical

July 8th, 2011

As of yesterday, Tim has been directly admitted back to Alexian Brothers.  Because the new seizure medication is not working, his doctor has decided it is no longer safe for him to be at home until the seizures are under control. Tim has an average of 4-5 seizures within a 24-hour period, where he stops breathing as well. Continued prayers for a light at the end of this dark tunnel is greatly appreciated.

Update 6.20.11 - Return to Hospital

July 2nd, 2011

2 days after returning home from Mayo Clinic, Tim was admitted to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. For the past 3 weeks, Tim has been experiencing twitches, as well as seizures during his sleep. He is currently on new medication in order to stop the seizures, however they are not working as well as we would all like. We are waiting for the results to several blood tests for some rare neurological & autoimmune diseases. Depending on the results, Tim may be transferred back to Rush in downtown Chicago for a continuous EEG monitoring. The past few weeks have definitely been a difficult time for Tim - Any words of encouragement would definitely bring his spirits up!

Update 6.13.11 - Home from Mayo Clinic

July 2nd, 2011

A little update: Mayo Clinic was unable to find a diagnosis for Tim's chest pain, but are leaning towards some type of muscle disorder or dystonia - which could possibly take years to diagnose. So far, Tim suffers from: ITP, high blood gases, adrenal gland insufficiency, vocal cord dysfunction disorder, 3 bulging discs, esophagitis, hyperlipidimia, a fatty liver, hypertensive, tachicardic, monoclonis seizures, b12 deficiency, and possibly larengeal dystonia. Tim is happy to be at home, and will be continuing his care out in Chicago. Thank you for all your love and support. <3

Update 6.2.11

July 2nd, 2011

As of 6.1.11, Tim is at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. He is currently under an extensive amount of outpatient testing. We truly appreciate all the love and support.. please keep Tim in your prayers during this difficult time. <3
