A fund to help a single, self-employed mother undergoing a double mastectomy.

My sister, Leila Grossman, is a celebrated portrait photographer and owner of Grannis Photography, the 72-year-old Nashville photo studio. Over the course of her career, Leila has photographed many Nashville businesses, documented the childhood of so many of Nashville's kids, not to mention their families and pets; her images record occasions both typical and exceptional. You can see some of her work at her site, http://grannisphotography.com. Leila has contributed time and talent to many charity organizations locally, and especially enjoys volunteering her time to photograph dogs and cats, raising thousands of dollars a year for the Nashville Humane Society and other rescue efforts.

Leila is a single mother of two young girls: Her older daughter is 9 and her youngest is almost 5. Leila is the sole financial provider and sole caregiver to both children. On her own, she has worked to provide her daughters with all that she can. Leila and her girls are very close. They enjoy playing violin together and often foster strays to help them find forever homes.

Earlier this summer, Leila was diagnosed with breast cancer. They caught it early and the prognosis is good. The hope is that the double mastectomy cures the cancer entirely. Leila is one of the strongest, most capable people women that I know. She is not someone who often asks for help--she is an "I can take care of it!" kind of person. However, she's in a real tough spot right now; she is a single parent and a small business owner in the middle of recession, and now is also having to deal with out of pocket medical costs that have depleted her savings. She has no way to replace the income that she has already lost with many weeks of doctors appointments and time off to deal with her reality. She needs to take September off in order to recover from this major surgery, and September is one of her largest months for income. She realizes that the stress of concern over her finances is detrimental to her health as she heals, and therefore the wellbeing of the entire household. She and the girls need help and she has decided to let us ask for it.

On Leila's behalf, I am reaching out to ask for help towards covering her household expenses, business bills and all the uncovered medical costs that are popping up as she preps for surgery. Friends and family are offering what we can by way of financial assistance and child care in order ensure she will be able to take some time off to recover from her surgery next week. Any additional assistance will be greatly appreciated by her and her daughters. Leila makes a large portion of her income during the fall, which makes the timing even more important in getting her help. I'm hopeful that lending her some financial support and income replacement will make losing this time to work a smaller blow and lower her stress level so that she can fully get past this thing.

It is always difficult to ask for help, but I am grateful that Leila is letting us lend her a hand to show our love and remind her of how much we admire and appreciate her; Leila is a role model not only to her daughters but to any woman who aspires to create for herself a life packed with love, friendship, adoring children and fulfilling work. I am just in awe of the way which Leila is able to use her fine eye to create lasting, inimitable images of Nashville families. With her big heart and way with kids and animals, more often than not those families have also become Leila's friends. She is lucky to be surrounded by a community of people who both appreciate her fine work and enjoy her warm, funny, idiosyncratic demeanor.

Grannis Photography's archival images of Nashville are amazing and are always available for purchase here:

Closing this fundraiser--thanks to all!

November 21st, 2011

To all who've reached out to help my sister, Leila,

I just wanted to send out a note to thank you for the outpouring of care and concern. The GiveForward campaign to help raise money for her to use towards her recovery and has made a major difference in her stress level. It wasn't easy for her to agree to ask for help, but she's been really touched by the response she's received in the last few months. Thanks to all who've given time, food, childcare, money, and love.

Leila is doing well and is getting back to work. In late September she was in a huge amount of pain for weeks, in both her back and chest. A trip to the ER enabled the doctors to find that one of the expanders (placed in her chest to make room for the implants to be inserted in several months) was found to be sitting on a pocket of infection.  She had it removed and the pain went away entirely.  While this was a step back in the recovery process for sure, Leila remained happy that is was not a cancer concern again.  She will need to get the expander put back in. There will be two more surgeries next year to complete reconstruction.

She is fatigued, but optimistic and relieved. She says she feels that this ordeal is helping her to reevaluate her life: where she puts her time, what she focuses on, and how to maintain a good balance between single motherhood and work, and reduce stress.  This life-altering event is helping her try to figure out how to spend as much stress-free time with her girls as possible.  Lyra and Aliya have been real troupers through all of this. Brave and helpful. I’m a very proud aunty.

We’re ending the GiveForward campaign this Friday. She has received over $21000 of her $30,000 goal.  We are both endlessly grateful for this gift as it will enable Leila to get caught up on mountains of unpaid bills and step back into full time work and motherhood without facing crippling stress and overtaxing her body. Thank you again to all who have helped in anyway.

Best,

Annie

Back in for more surgery, but home now

October 4th, 2011

Leila went to the ER last week after following two weeks of severe pain. She was admitted to the hospital on Thursday due to infection and had to have surgery to treat it on Friday afternoon. She was released last night. She is happy to be home and relieved to be out of pain -- I was down with her a couple of weeks ago and she was really feeling miserable.

There is no reason to explain the infection, it just happens sometimes. The main thing is that she is cancer free.

Thanks to all those who have contributed money, food and time. All three have made a big difference in helping her deal with the reality that it's still going to be a while before she'll be able to return to full-time work and to the busy life to which she was so accustomed.

If you could share this page with friends on Facebook or via email, it would be much appreciated.

With thanks,

Annie

Healthy Leila

September 20th, 2011

Hello from a healthy Leila!
Lyra, Aliya and I are so grateful for the outpouring of help, support and love from folks all over the world, and especially from the wonderful Nashville community.  The many bouquets of flowers, fruit baskets, pillows and cozy blanket, bags of food and staples, pet food, child care, rides to and from school for my girls, rides for me to doctor appointments, care packages, massages, and house cleaning, all have made these past 4 weeks so much more bearable than I could have ever imagined.  A huge thank you to all who have contributed to this phenomenal fundraiser that my beautiful sister, Annie, put together.  I have missed so much work, and am still not back at it, so these funds will enable me try to get caught up.  All of these gifts have truly helped me to rest, heal, and sleep, rather than concerning myself with finances.
Last Wednesday I got the final word that I really am clear, all breast cancer gone.  Neither side had spread to any lymph nodes, so the doctors are confident that I am cured.  I am currently attending weekly appointments for my reconstruction, which for me is utterly painful, but necessary to finish the process.  I should be beyond all surgeries within 5 months, and I cannot wait for that day to come so I can put this all behind me.
I am happy to share my diagnosis story as well as my experience over these last 4 weeks with anyone that is interested.  If so, please email me in October when I hope to be back in the swing of things, and I will share.  I had it all written out in this thank you note, but I decided it was too long and graphic and perhaps not everyone wanted to hear it all.

Thank you again.  I look forward to being able to give back for all that we have received.

Love,
Leila and the girls

One week since surgery

August 31st, 2011

Thanks to all who have contributed to this fund for Leila and her girls. What an outpouring! Leila has been home now for about a week. She's had ups and downs but is mostly doing well. Her spirits are high and her girls are with her. Our whole family is grateful for all the love and prayers pointed in Leila's direction right now.

Some people have been supporting her by purchasing vintage shots of Nashville from her extensive collection of original photos. You can check those out here:

Thanks,
Annie

Thank you!

Thanks so much to all those who have contributed to help Leila. Her surgery on Monday went well and she is leaving the hospital today. She is so moved at the outpouring of love from all of you. It's terrible for money to be such a stressor in these moments; what a blessing to have so many loving people lend a hand. Your generosity amazing. I am grateful to all of you for showing Leila how much she has touched so many people's lives, and how cared for she is.

A couple of her local friends put up a page on a website to help organize bringing meals to her and the girls. If you'd like the link, email me at annajaneg@gmail.com.

With gratitude,  Annie (Leila's sister)
