Raising Joel

Many of you know that Joel's life was forever changed on March 18, 2010.  On his way to work, he was involved in a car accident that severed his spinal cord and left him paralyzed with movement only from his biceps up.  He was in ICU at UT hospital for almost a month before transferring to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.  After intensive therapy, he returned home to knoxville on July 21st.

Although he is doing much better, he continues to need constant care and specialized equipment to meet his needs.  In true "Joel style," he has utilized his great sense of humor and his love of life to get himself (and all of us) through these very difficult times.  He is a true inspiration!  However, the physical, emotional, and financial impact has been tremendous.  He has been blessed by true angels who got "Joel Moving" when they donated an electric wheelchair and a handicap van (sincerest gratitude beyond words to the George Sampson family!!!)

Now we need help "Raising Joel."  You see, Joel is unable to get up to the main level of his home and is confined to the basement.  This really hampers two of his favorite activities - being the center of attention and constant grazing in the kitchen :)  We are trying to raise enough money to get a lift installed and would also like to get a hospital bed that automatically raises for easier care giving (and to keep his wonderful mother from ending up in one as well!)  Marilyn has been a primary caregiver throughout this (pretty much 24/7) and we don't know what we would do without her - literally.  She is trained to meet all of Joel's daily needs and if she were to become ill or need a leave, it would be necessary for a nurse to step in and help "raise" Joel for the time being.

There are also many other needed and desired items and services, and "Raising Joel" is the priority of this event!  Please help us in this endeavor by opening your hearts and wallets - every little bit helps and all your generous gifts will be greatly appreciated!!!

Also, please join us for a WELCOME HOME JOEL Party on August 21 from 6-10 at Toddy's Back Door Tavern.  There will be a cookout and music provided by Big Country's Empty Bottle. It will be a great time to gather in friendship and show our support for Joel.
