Lydia needs to fund her iPod touch so that she can speak!

For as long as I can remember (back to about my first birthday, believe it or not), I have had issues with speech. For anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to a day, I would lose the ability to speak, often brought on my stress or sensory overload. With my diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder at age 21 (though my family had noted many differences since I was just a baby), things made more sense. Over the past, well, lifetime, I have slowly had increasing difficulties with speaking for longer periods of time. At this point, I have been minimally verbal for a week or so. I had no way to communicate as soon as I left my computer, and it was terrifying, frustrating, so many things. My ever-helpful, loving, incredibly mother lent me the money I needed to purchase an iPod touch so that I could speak again (by using a text to speech program)... now, I owe my mother that money. Unable to work but without SSI thus far, unable to even babysit because who wants a nonverbal babysitter?, I am hoping that the gracious people my rich online world will help me out. Just $1 will be so much help to me! Please consider donating. Thank you.

iPod Touch for Lydia updates.

Thank you!

June 30th, 2011

I just wanted to update you all on where I've been since I got my iPod touch.

My words come and go.  Some days I do okay, and other days or hours they're just not there.  I try to roll with the punches and not get too excited when they go, because I know that they'll come back.  I have backup now, thanks to you, when I don't have my words.  I've found that even when my speech is okay, there are still things I communicate far more clearly by typing.

The iPod has proved useful in other ways, too.  The best example I can think of is that I have a way to stay seated longer in church.  Now, I know playing on an iPod during church isn't ideal, but it's a lot better than wandering the halls and missing the whole service!

I'm starting speech therapy on July 11th, so hopefully I'll learn some new strategies to improve my speech more.

If you'd like to continue to receive updates about me, my service dog, my attempts at a social life, and, of course, my words, check out my blog at www.autisticspeaks.wordpress.com

Thanks again for your generosity.  I couldn't have done it without you!
