Our daughter and sister, Heather Hoffner Harms, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer on December 28, 2009. She was 32-years young.

Heather began chemotherapy a few weeks ago that will continue for one year along with a series of weekly Nuelasta shots, vitamin B12 shots and Herceptin treatments. She recently learned that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes.

Because the chemotherapy significantly reduces her immune system, Heather was forced to quit her job as a pre-school teacher to avoid infection, causing financial strain for her, her husband Jonah, and their four-year old son Logan.

While Heather has medical insurance, she is certainly under insured. The co-pay for a PET body scan is $750, payment is accepted in advance only. Heather will require several PET scans to determine if the cancer has spread throughout her body. We estimate that her monthly recurring co-pay bills will be in excess of $400 each month.

Because Heather tested double negative and HER2 positive, meaning that a hormone is not causing her breast cancer, her oncologist recommends genetic testing for the breast cancer gene that is not covered by insurance, a total of $3,500. The chances Heather has the breast cancer gene are quite high, meaning she may qualify for a double masectomy, reconstruction and ovary removal. Her insurance company will not pay for the operation unless genetic testing is completed. Sadly, Heather cannot afford the genetic testing. Moreover, her surgery co-pay is $750 for each surgery; it may take three surgeries.

There are so many worries that come with breast cancer at such a young age: financial, emotional, physical, loss of job, how to explain it to her four-year old son, insurance coverage and more. Please help us remove one of Heather's stressors by donating today. Your donations will help offset the real costs of her insurance co-pays and genetic testing, bringing about a peace of mind that is invaluable.

Thank you in advance for helping our daughter and sister. Our entire family appreciates your support now more than ever. Please keep Heather in your thoughts and prayers.

With gratitude,

Emmett and Debbie Hoffner
