HOBY Arizona is raising funds to support their Leadership Summit 2012. Please join us in supporting the leaders of tomorrow.
HOBY Arizona is committed to helping our local youth by providing a premier, 4-day leadership development program for over 200 students! Please support the Arizona Youth Leadership Summit 2012
WHO ARE WE?
HOBY was founded in 1958 by actor Hugh O’Brian (famous for playing "Wyatt Earp" on TV back in the 1950's). After a 9-day inspirational visit to Africa with humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Hugh created a leadership program to help students become active leaders in their communities through service to others.
We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with affiliates in all 50 states. HOBY stands for Hugh O'Brian Youth (pronounced "hoe-bee" for short)
WHAT WE DO?
Leadership Programs: Each September, HOBY invites over 22,000 public, private, and charter high schools to select their most outstanding sophomore to attend one of 70 leadership programs in the U.S.
The following spring, HOBY holds 70 leadership seminars in all 50 states. Outstanding young leaders from approximately 8,000 high schools attend, based on demonstrating leadership in their schools and communities, regardless of race, ethnicity or socio-economic background.
Leadership for Service: During each Leadership Program, the HOBY “Ambassadors” collectively complete a community service project. At the completion of each program, each student pledges to complete 100 more hours of their own time contributing to their local communities.
WHO BENEFITS FROM HOBY?
The community:
HOBY alumni return to their own communities and apply all the skills and ideas they have learned. Community organizations, such as senior centers, schools, churches, hospitals and more, count on HOBY “ambassadors” to continue the tradition of service that other HOBY alumni began.
The students:
HOBY “ambassadors” learn how to become community leaders and realize their full potential. Additionally, studies show that students participating in civic service decrease their chances of dropping out of school and prevent at-risk behavior.
ABOUT THE Arizona Youth Leadership Summit:
• A 4-day event held on the campus of Arizona State University in Phoenix.
• Summit leaders are comprised of volunteers from corporate sponsors, civic organizations, and HOBY alumni
• Held annually each June and includes topics of leadership & motivation, entrepreneurship, community service, financial literacy and environmental responsibility
• Combines hands-on leadership and teambuilding activities, community service projects, and positive social activities
• Volunteer adult facilitators lead groups of 8-10 students throughout the entire seminar weekend
• Speakers, panelists, and activity leaders volunteer their time and resources to participate
WHO CAN ATTEND THE HOBY SEMINAR?
• Every high school in the State of Arizona (public and private) is invited to select and send one outstanding sophomore “Ambassador.” Each school should also be selecting an alternate in case the primary is not able to attend. Space permitting, alternates will have the opportunity to also attend
WHAT IS THE COST TO HOST A HOBY STUDENT?
The cost per student (raised entirely by HOBY volunteers) is $400. This includes meals, lodging, facilities, and training materials for the entire 4-day event.
Event is funded entirely by sponsorships from corporations, civic organizations, foundations, and private citizens.
WHAT IS THE DIRECT COST TO THE STUDENT OR FAMILY?
The only thing the student is responsible for is transportation to and from the seminar and any additional spending cash, (i.e. for photos and souvenirs).
