Thank you to each and every single one…

The family and friends of Silvio Dante Ferrari are uniting to raise money to help with his battle against cancer. Please show your support!

Hello everyone! We set this fund raiser up to help Silvio, our 3 year old Pit Bull, beat bone cancer (osteosarcoma). Silvio has been a member of our family since he was 7 weeks old, and he is loved very dearly! He has an amazing personality and a kind soul. He loves everyone he meets, and everyone that meets him loves him right back! Silvio's best friend is a 5 year old female kitty named Nixxi! Here is Silvio's story thus far:

March 15, 2011 - A lump was noticed in Silvio's shoulder.
We were informed by his doctor that this was probably a cancerous tumor. We were devastated for Silvio.

March 17, 2011 - A biopsy was done on the mass and it was confirmed that Silvio's mass was an active sarcoma. It was cancer.

March 25, 2011 - Silvio had a surgery/amputation of his front left leg to remove the mass. What we thought was an egg-sized mass actually turned out to be a billiard ball sized mass. Dr. Berg explained to us that the mass was lifting and separating Silvio's shoulder as he moved and that the amputation was the only way to remove the mass and ease his pain.

Silvio had his surgery at:
Animal Care Center
7 Enterprise Drive
Danville, PA 17821
(570) 275-6064
Dr. Ken Berg (Silvio's regular vet and surgeon)

April 8, 2011 - Silvio was re-examined and had his staples removed. Dr. Berg recommended chemo, and that we get Silvio started with his chemo treatments as soon as possible. We set an appointment up with Dr. Jeglum at the Veterinary Oncology Services and Research Center for April 18, 2011!

Silvio needs 2 different medicines (Adriamycin and Cisplatin), they will alternate each treatment and he'll have 6 treatments total, about 3 weeks apart. He'll also have to have blood work (CBC tests) done 7-10 days after each treatment to make sure his white blood cell count is normal. Silvio has already had 1 Adriamycin treatments. Dr. Jeglum will be administering the Cisplatin treatments and Dr. Berg will be administering the remaining Adriamycin treatments, along with the required CBC tests in between each treatment.

April 18, 2011 - Silvio had his very 1st chemo treatment. Silvio handled this treatment very well with no sickness and very little fatigue!

May 3, 2011 - Silvio celebrated his 3rd birthday!!!

We're doing everything in our power to give Silvio the happiest and healthiest life that he could possibly have! He really means the world to us and to the rest of our family. Silvio is considered our child, a nephew, cousin and Granddog to other family members. Please help us to help him fight and beat his cancer!

I will be posting updates with all news that we receive and after every appointment Silvio has! Please be sure to check back for updates! If you could find it in your heart to donate, we'd be forever grateful. If you are not in the position to donate, please share his story/link and help us spread the word for this little boy! We appreciate any help you could provide!

If anyone would rather send a check directly to Silvio's veterinarians, you may send a check with his name (Silvio) and my name (Cassandra Moyle) in the memo to:

Thank you to each and every single one of you for donating to Silvio, and for making it possible for us to help him fight as far as he could. An Angel Has Gained His Wings

May 18th, 2011

<3 My Sweet Silvio <3

In May of 2008, I fell in love with this little brown pibble with a crooked tail. We named you Silvio, and called you our own. Mommy and Daddy came to visit you as often as we could, until you were finally old enough to come home. The day you came home was one of the best days of my life, and it kept getting better in the 3 very short years that we had together. Sadly, today is one of the toughest days of my life. I miss you terribly.

I wish there were answers to why this would happen to a perfect little boy like you. In the beginning I couldn't help but to ask why, but I quickly learned that no answer would satisfy me. So I stopped asking.

I'm sorry that the past week was so painful for you. I would do anything for you to not have had to experience that pain.I want you to know that I did everything in my power to help you fight, and if there were any other options we would have taken them. It was time to ease your pain and to let you rest. You were such a little trooper. You were telling us that you were ready, I could see it in your eyes. You're now free... free of pain and suffering... free from cancer. Yesterday you gained your wings. Fly sweet boy! Mommy and Daddy love you! <3

---------------------

I want you all to know that Silvio had a good day yesterday, after having a very rough morning. It took me 3 hours to get Silvio to want to come downstairs. He was in so much pain that he didn't want to move (even after taking Tramadol). I finally got him to come downstairs on his own. He parked himself of the couch. We invited friends and family to come over and say their goodbyes to Silvio. Memmy even brought Snickers and Mikey (her 2 Chihuahuas, Silvio's friends) over to see him. Snick and Mikey were the only ones that could get Silvio up. He was so happy while they were here. We considered waiting until this morning to say our final goodbye, but couldn't ask him to have another morning like he did yesterday and wanted to let him go while he was happy. He was in such agony lately. We all smothered Silvio with love for the rest of the evening, and then we set him free. Dr. Berg sat on the floor with us and explained how everything worked, and reassured us that Silvio would have no pain and that it would be peaceful. Vince and I stayed with Silvio the whole time, holding his paw, kissing his face and telling him how much we loved him. A piece of my heart and soul went with him. There will forever be a pibble shaped hole in my heart.

I know that you all loved him, and I thank you for that. Silvio D. Ferrari was such a special little boy! May his memory live on, and may we all take a lesson from his strength and courage.

- Cassandra (Silvio's Mommy)

Saying Goodbye...

May 17th, 2011

I'm heartbroken to tell you all that we will be saying goodbye to Silvio. He has been in excruciating pain for the past couple of days. Sunday night was the worst. Silvio was in so much pain that he didn't want to move, or get up to do anything. He wouldn't even go out to pee, and he eventually wet himself. That's when I knew something was terribly wrong. I took him to the vet 1st thing on Monday and had blood work and Xrays done. The Xrays showed that another mass was growing back, and that the cancer had spread to his chest very aggressively. Dr. Berg consulted with Dr. Jeglum to talk about radiation options. Radiation will help to ease Silvio's pain, but will not lessen the spread of his cancer. Vince and I both are in agreement that we will not subject Silvio to this, and that it's best for Silvio if we set him free. Dr. Berg and Dr. Jeglum both support our decision. It would be completely selfish of us to keep him here, knowing that he'll be suffering and will ultimately have the same fate. We're spending the day saying goodbye to him, and letting family members and others do the same. Silvio is letting us know it is time. We are completely heartbroken, but have to do what is right by him. If we had any other options we would explore them, but Silvio is suffering at this point and it's not fair to him any longer.

Thank you for all of your love and support! We appreciate you more than you could know!

Sending Love,
Cassandra J. Moyle

Silvio's 1st Cisplatin Treatment

May 13th, 2011

Sorry it's taken me a few days to update... I've been having trouble with my internet connection at home.

Silvio had his first Cisplatin treatment on May 10th, which he received at Brandywine Veterinary Hospital by Dr. Brad Gray. This was a very long treatment for Silvio, it lasted 6-7 hours. Silvio seems to be handling it well. He is having discomfort and has been whining a little bit. I called to check in with the doctor and this is normal for a few days. We were also given the ok to give him Tramadol as needed for the discomfort.

Silvio will receive his remaining Cisplatin treatments with Dr. Jeglum at Veterinary Oncology Services and Research Center. I want you all to know that this is on the recommendation of Silvio's regular vet, and because Jeglum is a specialist. Our return to VOSRC has nothing to do with the service that we received with Dr. Brad Gray and his staff at Brandywine. They were absolutely wonderful to us while we were there, and Silvio just loved them! I encourage you all to visit Dr. Gray at Brandywine if ever you find yourself in a similar situation as we are in now with Silvio. He does wonderful work with and for rescues, and offers compassionate pricing to families in need!

Silvio is due for another CBC test this Tuesday, and then another Adriamycin treatment in 3 weeks with Dr. Berg at Animal Care. I'll be posting after his appointments.

If you have any questions, please email me at cassandramoyle@gmail.com

Thank you,
Cassandra Moyle

New Treating Vet for Silvio

May 4th, 2011

*New Treating Vet for Silvio!*

As of yesterday, Silvio will be receiving his chemo treatments at Brandywine
Veterinary Hospital in Chadds Ford, PA! We were contacted by Dr. Brad Gray
of Brandywine with an offer to do Silvio's treatments at a discounted price!
He offered to do Silvio's treatments at an estimated $2,000, this includes
all of his medicines and blood work! Dr. Gray will be administering Silvio's
Cisplatin treatments, and will be working with Dr. Berg (Silvio's regular
vet, Animal Care Center), who will be administering the Adriamycin
treatments. Just incase there is any confusion, Silvio will receive all 3
Cisplatin treatments from Dr. Gray at Brandywine, and Silvio will receive
the remaining 2 treatments of Adriamycin from Dr. Berg at Animal Care
Center. Silvio will also have the CBC tests that are required between
treatments done by Dr. Berg. We do not have an estimate from Dr. Berg just
yet. When we do, we'll be adjusting the figures. I'm going to go out on a
limb and say that the new *total* for Silvio's treatments will be
$3,000-$4,000 instead of the $5,000 that we were quoted with Dr. Jeglum.

With this wonderful offer from Dr. Gray we will be saving money, saving 4
hours of travel time on the Adriamycin days, Silvio will be receiving the
same medicines and will be able to work closer with Dr. Berg (who is
Silvio's regular vet/surgeon). We would like to thank Dr. Gray and his staff
at Brandywine Veterinary Hospital for this generous offer, and we look
forward to meeting all of you in person!

A big thank you to Dr. Berg and the whole staff an Animal Care Center! You
are all so good to us and to Silvio! It's quite clear that Silvio loves you
guys, as do we!

We would like to thank our friends at the Lost and Found Dog Rescue (LNF) for putting us in contact with Dr. Gray at Brandywine, who is also their veterinarian. Please be sure to visit their website: www.lnfdogs.org   LNF FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/LNFDogRescue

We would also like to thank Dr. Jeglum and her staff for seeing Silvio and
administering his 1st treatment! They were wonderful to Silvio and to us
while we were there!

Silvio's CBC Test 4/26/2011

April 26th, 2011

Today Silvio had an appointment at Animal Care (his regular vet) for a CBC test. A complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test used to measure and evaluate cells that circulate in the blood. The test includes an actual counting of red and white blood cells as well as an analysis of cells viewed. He'll have to have this test done 7-10 days after each chemo treatment. This test came back normal and we can proceed with treatments! We also received digital copies of Silvio's Xrays to give to his Oncologist. Dr. Berg did an additional set of 3 Xrays on Silvio's chest, at no charge, because it would cost us a fortune to have these same Xrays done at the Oncology Center. Dr. Berg said that this was his way of donating to Silvio! :o) The chest Xrays are coming back clear! This is great news at this point because as the doctor had explained before, if another mass was going to reoccur it would most likely do so in his chest cavity.

Silvio has been handling his 1st chemo treatment very well! He hasn't been sick, or too tired. Although he has been eating grass. The doctor said that this is ok and normal (lol). Silvio actually had a really busy day yesterday. We went to my Mom's house where he played with her 5 Chihuahuas, went for a walk, rolled in the mud, played in a creek and then we returned to my Mom's house where he played in the kiddie pool with my 4 year old nephew! I've been trying to keep Silvio active, and so far it's been pretty easy!

Our next appointment isn't until May 10th... this will be his 2nd chemo treatment. It's also the "bad" one, which lasts 6-8 hours. Vince and I will be in the room with Silvio the whole time that he is receiving his treatment. I'm hoping that we'll be able to comfort him for that long and that it won't be too hard on him! I'll be updating after his appointment. Until then...

Sending love and many thanks to all of you!

Silvio's 1st Chemo Treatment

April 19th, 2011

Silvio had his very 1st chemo treatment yesterday! We got to the Oncology Center yesterday... I went ahead to check us in, Daddy took Silvio to pee before coming inside. We filled out all of our paperwork as we waited for the doctor. Silvio's name was finally called and we went to the back room. Dr. Jeglum introduced herself, as did we, and then we proceeded to exchange Silvio's information. Once getting all of the info that she needed, Dr. Jeglum told us that we were to start treatment immediately. She said that she didn't want to waste any valuable time. So Silvio was prepped and taken to another room for his very 1st chemo treatment. At first this was just suppose to be a "meet and greet" (consultation and exam) with the doctor but after realizing what kind of cancer he has and the location that the sarcoma was she wanted to start immediately! Dr. Jeglum explained that sarcoma's that are located on a limb are usually more aggressive the higher they are on that limb. Silvio's was located on the top of his leg/shoulder.

Silvio handled his 1st treatment very well. This treatment lasted 20 minutes. Before we came home he was given an anti-nausea injection. He was also sent home with 3 more doses of anti-nausea meds and an antibiotic. We have an appointment with Dr. Berg (Silvio's regular vet) to have a CBC (blood) test done on Tuesday April 26th. Silvio's next chemo treatment will be on Tuesday May 10th... this treatment will be 6-8 hours long. This will be his 1st treatment on the second kind of chemo medicine. From there on, the treatments will then alternate medicines.

I'm going to see if we can get the funds from Silvio's fund raiser without actually closing it out. We really need the funds for his next treatment. If I can get the funds without closing the fund raiser we will continue to raising on that site... if by chance we have to close it out completely, we will be starting another in it's place and I will email everyone the link to the new one before actually closing it. I'll be in touch! If anyone has an questions, please email me at cassandramoyle@gmail.com

Update 04/12/2011

April 12th, 2011

Hello everyone!

I wanted to let you all know where we stand with Silvio's treatments. Dr. Berg just called today to check on Silvio, and to give us the contact information for the Oncologist. After receiving the information, I called the Oncologist's office myself. I didn't really receive any new information, but I did set an appointment up for a consultation/exam for Monday April 18, 2011. This is our first step. We'll learn more with this visit and can be directed on what to do next for Silvio. The payment is still going to be close to $5,000... and it's still an estimated 6 treatments, 1 per week. If Silvio has a bad reaction to the chemo, they may do less treatments for him. We won't know until he starts.

We're continuing to raise funds for him. Please share his link for us! This would be a great help! We thank all of you that have shown great generosity already. You're all appreciated!

Sending love and many thanks,
Cassandra, Vince and Silvio

Staples Removed! (and chemo recommendation)

April 8th, 2011

Hello Everyone!

We just got back from the doctor. Silvio had his staples removed and the doctor said that he's healing beautifully!

We also starting talking about chemo options. Dr. Berg had talked to the Oncologist, who is located in West Chester PA, and she is recommending that we do 2 different treatments, alternating each 3 times, so that would be 6 treatments total. He would have 1 treatment a week. The chemo medicine is an injection and each administration would take about 2 hours. We also got an estimate for the medicines, which will total about around $5,000... maybe a little more, maybe a little less. Dr. Berg is calling the Oncologist later on today to see if it's possible to administer the medications right at Animal Care to make it easier for us and not so far to travel. He said that they already administer one of those medications for Lymphoma patients, and will push to be able to get the other one for us. We asked Dr. Berg if he thought that the cancer was completely gone and he said that he couldn't be 100% certain, and that's the reason for the chemo. He explained to us that each chemo treatment with kill 90% of remain cancer cells (if any are present) at a time until they're demolish and gone. He also said that Silvio's type of cancer is most likely to resurface in the chest area, if ever, and he said that nothing is visible in Silvio's chest at this point. So that's good news! The other good news is that Dr. Berg said that Silvio should have a long and happy life expectancy once his treatments are complete, although he can't promise that cancer will never be present again. Just like in humans, a dog that once had cancer is at higher risk for cancer in the future. We'll have to remain aware of this and have him checked regularly. Dr. Berg should be calling me later on today after talking again with the Oncologist about the medications. I'll keep you all informed!

To those of you who have donated, we thank you! To those of you that have helped spread the word and to share our story, we thank you! And to those of you who have shown Silvio and our family a lot of unconditional love and support, we thank you!

Send the love right back,
Cassandra, Vince and Silvio

Biopsy Results

April 4th, 2011

Hello everyone!

Dr. Berg called with the biopsy results this morning. It's osteosarcoma (the type we were hoping that it was not), so chemo it is! :( The doc is talking to the oncologist to see what our options are with chemo and how much we can expect to pay. We have an appt this Friday, he'll have more info for us then. I fill you in as I am informed!

Depending on what we learn this Friday, we may extend Silvio's fund raiser, and raise our goal.

We want to thank all of you for helping us reach our initial goal of $1,000! To be honest, I never expected to reach it... But with the help of our family, friends and a few of you that we've never even met, we did it! Your generosity is appreciate way more than we could ever express!

I'll be updating again after Silvio's appointment on Friday!

Sending love and many thanks,
Cassandra and Family

Touching Base

April 2nd, 2011

I just wanted to touch base with everyone and to let you all know that Silvio is still doing well! He has had some discomfort as he tries to stand up. I'm associating this with his skin and muscles tightening as they heal. He appears to be stiff. I've had to redress him a few times due to his wrinkles coming out of the top of his bandage which then also exposes some of his staples. Silvio is sick of me fussing over him already (lol).

We still have not received the biopsy results. We're expecting them anytime between now and the end of next week. We'll be updating after we receive them, and after Silvio's appointment on April 8th to have his staples removed. Until then...

Sending Love,
Cassandra

Vet Appt 3/29/11

March 29th, 2011

Silvio had a vet appointment today to have his incision and staples examined. Dr. Berg said that everything looks GREAT! Silvio has been re-wrapped to keep his staples covered and to keep pressure on the incision site. Dr. Berg explained to me that the muscles in that area aren't very secure at the moment, and that the dressing will help to keep everything tight and secure until everything is healed properly. (about 2 weeks) We have an appointment on April 8th to have Silvio re-examined and to have his staples removed. We're still waiting on the biopsy results, we'll be called as soon as they're in.

The doctor also said that Silvio should be able to swim with his lifejacket with little to no problem this summer! This is wonderful news considering swimming is Silvio's favorite summer activity! It will be the best exercise for him with the least amount of stress to his remaining front leg. This makes me really happy!

I'll keep everyone informed as things progress. Stay tuned for more photos! Also, check out Silvio's FB page at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001700050153&ref=ts  We have an album started for him on his page.

If anyone has any questions, please email me at cassandramoyle@gmail.com

Thanks for your love and support!

1st Night At Home

March 27th, 2011

Silvio slept very well last night, which he hasn't done in awhile. He woke up this morning feeling good, went out to pee without a problem, took his medicine like a champ, ate a cookie, got himself a drink and then planted himself on the couch! I'm so happy so see him relaxing and not in the pain that he was in! This is step 1 for us... we've got many steps ahead of us yet, but we'll take them one at a time! We go back to see the doctor this Tuesday. He'll have his dressing and stitching checked. We'll be updating after his appointment.

Dr. Berg called this morning to check in on Silvio. <3

March 26th, 2011

SILVIO IS HOME!!!! We just got home a little while ago! Everything went beautifully! Silvio is doing wonderful and is walking without a problem! He is resting now. We have an appointment on Tuesday to have his dressing removed and his stitching checked. He has 2 different kinds of pain medicine and is on an antibiotic.

I was so relieved to see his happy smiling face this morning!

We will be in touch! If anyone would like more information, please email me at cassandramoyle@gmail.com

Courtesy Call

March 25th, 2011

Dr. Berg just called us to let us know that Silvio is still doing well and that he is comfortable. We'll know sometime in the morning if Silvio will be able to come home tomorrow, or if he'll have to stay longer. I'd love to have him home but want him to have the best care possible... and if that means staying an extra night or two just to be certain he's ok, then so be it! I plan to visit him if he can't come home tomorrow. I'll keep everyone informed! Until tomorrow....

-Cassandra

Silvio is in recovery.

March 25th, 2011

The doctor just called. Silvio's surgery went very well and he is now in recovery. They did have to take his leg. The doctor explained that this was best for him. We originally thought that the mass was egg-sized... it turns out that it was actually the size of a billard ball. The mass was deeper than we thought and was growing under his shoulder blade, lifting and separating it. This was the main source of his pain. The doctor is sending the mass and additional tissue samples to the lab for a biopsy to see exactly what kind of cancer this is. We'll know more after receiving the results. I was reassured that Silvio will remain on "heavy duty" pain medication for awhile and will be comfortable. Although the doctor said that Silvio will be a little more sore than another dog would be because he is so muscley and from the stretching to sew him up. If he's alert and moving around tomorrow he can come home. If not, they're going to keep him for another day or 2. The doctor is going to call me later this evening to let me know how Silvio is doing. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks again for all of your support!

-Cassandra

Big Day

March 25th, 2011

Silvio is now at the vet. Once started, his surgery should take about 3 1/2 hours. I will be sending more updates later, after hearing from the doctor! Thank you for all of your love and support!

Biopsy Update

March 21st, 2011

I misunderstood what the Dr. said about Sil's biopsy sample. They weren't sending that sample to the lab, the Dr. got all of the info that he needed from that sample. However, he will be sending the

tissue sample

out to the lab AFTER Silvio's surgery to determine exactly what kind of cancer he has. The outcome is still the same for Silvio, whether it's a soft tissue sarcoma or osteosarcoma. The sarcoma (an active cancerous tumor) has already calcified and has to be removed no matter what! He is still having surgery this Friday. The Dr, is still 99% sure that he'll have to do the amputation but is still going to see if he can just remove the mass and muscle. He said that since the sarcoma has calcified that we should still be preparing for the amputation. We really won't know anything more until after Silvio's surgery on Friday. If anyone has any questions, please email me at cassandramoyle@gmail.com

Preparing for the worst, hoping for the BEST! ?

Feeling a little better...

March 20th, 2011

Silvio is feeling a little better today. His pain seems to be less than the previous couple of days. It seems that the combo of Deramaxx and Tramadol pain medicine is working for him. Silvio got to spend some extra time outside today to enjoy the sun since it was so nice out.  :o)

More meds...

March 18th, 2011

Today Silvio started taking a 2nd pain medicine at the recommendation of his vet. We're trying to maintain his comfort until he has his surgery on the 25th. It's sooo hard to see the little guy in pain :(

Thank you!

March 18th, 2011

We want to thank everyone that has donated so far! Your help is appreciated more than we can say!

"I've never met you or Silvio, but I know your hearts must be breaking. You are the best thing to have happened in his life and you've made his final days full of love. You made the best decision for him, but the worst for you and that is how we should measure love for an animal - if we're willing to have our hearts broken so that they will be pain free and at peace. May God bless you. You have been Silvio's angels and now he will be yours. Love you, Silvio!"
