Gloves Up & Ready to Fight
Recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), Michael Krutchick, begins his fight to become a cancer survivor and to raise awareness of this disease. So what is Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)? AML is a quick
developing cancer which starts inside bone marrow.
This type of cancer is typically found in adults around 60, making Michael's diagnosis rare. The abnormal cells in his bone marrow are growing rapidly; therefore healthy blood cells are decreasing and bone marrow function is diminishing. Thankfully Michael's healthcare
team is aggressive and are hopeful of a remission period after his initial rounds of chemotherapy.
Michael was admitted to NY Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center on October 3, 2011. He is a patient on the 10th floor, where he has just finished a 10 day (24 hours each day!) chemotherapy treatment. I told you he's brave!! Michael has also undergone several platelet and blood transfusions to help get his AML under control. Vincent (big bro) has been swabbed to see if his stem cells are a match. These stem cells will eventually play a valuable role in Michael's continued treatment. We will know more about this when Michael enters part two of the treatment process. Tomorrow (10/19) Michael is having his third bone marrow biopsy to see if there are abnormal cells left after this round of chemotherapy. It's an uncomfortable procedure for him & we need you to help us keep him on the up & up.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL

November 24, 2011
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! The Krutchick Family is very thankful for all the love and support that has come their way these last 2 months. Michael must stay close to the hospital because his counts are low. A fever from infection is a possibility. Mikhaerl, Sam and Adele spent Thanksgiving on the east side. They made the best of it by running up to Food Emporium for a rotisserie chicken, stuffing and some sides; .
Keep those prayers and hugs coming Michaels way. GLOVES UP!
REMEMBER THE MARROW DRIVE ON DECEMBER 3...PLEASE BE THERE!

Crotty Foundation Donates $1,500 to Help 20 year-old Suffern Resident in Need of a Bone Marrow Transplant—Major Bone Marrow Drive Planned in Suffern December 3rd
The Vincent Crotty Memorial Foundation which has helped many local families both publically and anonymously over the past eighteen months has stepped up to the plate to help out a local family in need once again.
Twenty year old Michael Krutchick, Suffern’s gentle giant at 6’4” was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). AML is a cancer that develops quickly inside bone marrow. Generally this cancer is discovered in much older people making Michael’s diagnosis rare. Michael is currently undergoing treatment at New York Presbyterian Hospital but desperately needs a bone marrow transplant.
Suffern Police Chief Clarke Osborn, President of the Vincent Crotty Memorial Foundation spoke with Pete & Jean Crotty and the decision was made to help Michael Krutchick. Less than 24 hours later the Krutchick family was at Suffern Village Hall with Chief Osborn and Suffern Mayor Dagan LaCorte to pick up the donation. While discussing the process and Michael’s prognosis, Mayor LaCorte offered the use of the Suffern Community Center in order to hold a Bone Marrow Registration Drive.
A single phone call from the Mayor and the date and venue were booked. The Bone Marrow Drive is set to take place on Saturday December 3rd at the Suffern Community Center, 41 Washington Avenue from 11:00am and 5:00pm
We spoke with the DKMS in New York City to find out more about the Bone Marrow Drive, how it works and facts about Leukemia.
Blood cancer is the second leading cause of all cancer deaths in the U.S., with lung cancer being the first.
Leukemia kills more children in the U.S. than any other disease.
Every 4 minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer and every 10 minutes, blood cancer takes a precious life.
Only 30% of patients find a match within their family. The other 70% of patients rely on a perfect stranger to give them a second chance at life.
Sadly, 6 out of 10 patients never receive the lifesaving transplant they need.
Patients are most likely to match a donor with a similar ethnic background. Patients with more diverse ethnic backgrounds (including African-Americans, Latinos, Asians) tend to have more diverse HLA types, making it even more difficult to find a match.
There are more than 4,000 known HLA characteristics that can occur in millions of combinations. The donor and patient must have at least 8 tissue (HLA) characteristics in common to be considered a match but ideally should have 10.
Having more donors and more ethnic diversity on the registry increases the chance of finding matches for all patients.
In principle, any generally healthy person between the ages of 18 and 55, who weighs at least 110 pounds and does not exceed a maximum body mass index (BMI) of 40, and who would consider donating to any patient s/he matches, can register as a donor.
The Registration process involves filling out a form and swabbing the inside of your cheeks to collect cells for tissue typing. Your information will remain anonymously on the Be The Match Registry® (operated by the NMDP) until your 61st birthday unless you ask to have it removed.
As a registered donor you can be matched to any patient in need and must be willing to donate using either of the two donation methods.

1. Peripheral Blood Stem Cells (PBSC) Donation
Cells are collected via the bloodstream. To increase the number of stem cells in the bloodstream, donors receive daily injections of a synthetic protein called filgrastim for 4 days before and on the day of the collection.
On the day of collection the donor's blood is removed with a sterile needle from one arm and passed through a machine that separates out the blood stem cells. The remaining blood is returned
to the donor through the other arm. The cell collection is an outpatient procedure that takes about 4-6 hours on 1-2 consecutive days.
While taking the medication, many donors experience flu-like symptoms such as headaches, bone and muscle achiness and fatigue. Most side effects should subside within 48 hours of donating.
2. Bone Marrow Donation
Marrow cells are collected from the backside of the pelvic bone (not the spine) using a special syringe. Donors receive general anesthesia so no pain is experienced during the marrow extraction. This is a 1-2 hour, outpatient, surgical procedure.
Many donors experience some pain, bruising and stiffness for up to two weeks after their donation. Within a week of donating, most donors are able to return to work, school and many regular activities. The donor’s marrow is completely replenished within a few weeks.
A simple cheek swab and filling out a form is all it takes to register to save a life.
This holiday season, register to expand the database to provide hope to someone who truly needs the gift of life.
