‘Fight For Barre’: Kim is a 24 year old mother that is fighting a rare form of cancer.
She is fighting this disease for her son, Barrett Jay. Hence the ‘Fight For Barre’ slogan our cancer bracelets. http://fightforbarre.blogspot.com
Kimberly graduated college in August of ’08 with a promising career in the medical field. Shortly after that she found out she was pregnant. At around 27 weeks pregnant she began having pain. Her OB doctor decided to do a biopsy at 30 weeks pregnant and this is when Kim, then age 23, was diagnosed with a rare form of small cell cervical cancer. Her OB doctor referred her to an oncology doctor at a large central Texas hospital. After meeting with him and several other doctors, the team decided to deliver Kim's baby at 31 weeks 5 days. On April 22 by c-section, Kim had a healthy, beautiful baby boy, 3lbs. 11 oz. named Barrett Jay. The day after, she went into minor surgery to have a port placed into her chest in order for chemotherapy to be administered. 2 days after her son was born she began rigorous, aggressive chemotherapy. It made her very sick and extremely exhausted. 2 weeks after treatment began she lost all of her hair. She got into contact with a lady who donates great wigs to cancer patients and Kim was very excited and happy she found a good one! After 3 months of chemotherapy, Kim began 25 rounds of radiation therapy. The radiation took a huge toll on her body. It was a struggle for her to gain enough strength to make it through each day. The radiation and chemo ended up putting Kim in the hospital for 5 days where she received platelets for her blood and a blood transfussion. Then in November she found out there was still tumor on her cervix, therefore she went into surgery for a complete hysterectomy. In December she began chemotherapy again. Her oncologist decided this chemo was not working and that there was nothing more to do. Kim took this news and didn't stop there. Currently she is going to MD Anderson in Houston, TX to get a 2nd opinion. There, they told her that there are options, they involve more chemotherapy, body scans, and blood work, and a great deal traveling to and from the hospital . Praise the Lord there are more options! She is fighting this disease with all she has for the opportunity to raise her little man, Barre. The most important thing in Kim’s world is to raise her son. She hasn't been able to work since April of 2009 due to all the doctor's appointments and the intense effects of the strong, rough treatments, and all of the doctor's appointments to come and more treatments. Kim's mother is unable to work as well because she is helping take care of Kim and Barrett when she is very sick from treatment, and she has taken Kim out of town to her many doctor's appointments and treatments. Kim is fighting this disease bravely and with everything she has. She has great family and friend’s emotional support, but we are not related to Bill Gates, so we are trying to raise funds to help with the medical expenses and travel costs for Kimberly. I am starting this web site because I can not sit by and not help her somehow. Kim reminds me of Spring; she lights up a room when she enters. I am so proud of the way she takes care of Barre even though she is going through such tough times. For more of her story and updates and pictures, please go to the web site http://fightforbarre.blogspot.com/ Kim’s aunt started this blog site. They both update it periodically.
If you can’t donate to this cause, Kimberly would graciously accept your prayers.
God Bless you all,
Kimberly’s proud Dad.
