I would like to join TOMS Shoes in providing shoes to South African children in need in order to prevent podoconiosis. Podoconiosis is a disease that causes deformities and ulcers in feet and legs, and is completely preventable with shoes.

In 2008 I was fortunate enough to travel to Egypt, be it unexpectedly. During my time there I was struck by how children were roaming the streets without shoes on, regardless of the condition of the streets, simply because they didn't have appropriate footwear available to them. Through the voice of the band Hanson I learned of the efforts of TOMS Shoes to provide the needy with footwear, and I immediately decided to take action and donate whatever I could to support their efforts. Only recently did I learn I could actually go one step further and deliver the shoes myself.

TOMS provides over 100,000 pairs of shoes per year to individuals and communities in the United States, Argentina, and South Africa. They have developed something called the One for One Movement, for every pair of TOMS Shoes purchased a pair is given to a child in need. By providing children with shoes they are, in essence, improving the quality of life for these children, as well as allowing them to reach their full potential by being able to attend schools that do not allow barefoot children to attend.
