Military service exacts a heavy toll on soldiers and their families. According to a recent report by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, the unemployment rate among veterans is 13.1% and many more are underemployed. 21.3% of veterans between the ages of 18 and 24 fall below the national poverty level. Even if their basic health needs are met, service members often have expenses that exceed their income. Bills accumulate while they are deployed and time spent job searching after returning home can cripple their finances.
