Is is possible to prevent cancer? According to the American Cancer Society, regular screenings, preventative medicine and a healthy lifestyle can dramatically increase your chances to live a cancer-free life.

Military service exacts a heavy toll on soldiers and their families. According to a recent report by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, the unemployment rate among veterans is 13.1% and many more are underemployed. 21.3% of veterans between the ages of 18 and 24 fall below the national poverty level. Even if their basic health needs are met, service members often have expenses that exceed their income. Bills accumulate while they are deployed and time spent job searching after returning home can cripple their finances.

Teaching is undeniably one of the most difficult professions in our country. Our staff pick this week honors an educator who bravely faces pancreatic cancer while encouraging the children at her local YWCA.

Here at GiveForward, we see fundraisers starting everyday by loved ones wanting to support a family member who is going through a medical crisis. However, there is one fundraiser on the site that isn’t just for one person, but 3 members of one family battling cancer at the same time. At GiveForward we often see stories of family and friends coming together to raise money for funeral expenses for loved ones. When we read the heartbreaking story of 9 year old Julianna Marie Radilla, everyone in the office was overwhelmed with sadness and our hearts went out to the entire Radilla family. Sometimes inexplicable tragedies happen that remind us how fragile our lives are- and because of this we decided to make Julianna’s fundraiser this week’s staff pick fundraiser.
