"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." ~ M Mead

Nic Kempfert, a 26-year-old cancer survivor, our son, brother, partner, nephew, cousin and great friend, graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Biochemistry in May 2009. 2 weeks after his graduation, he got sick and was admitted to the U of M medical center with Acute Biphenotypic Leukemia. He and his two siblings are all Type I diabetics, so we are no strangers to chronic illness, but this was cancer. He quickly got very sick because he was infected with fungal pneumonia, and over the next two months underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy, had kidney failure, was put on a respirator, and was given a very slim chance of surviving. He had to have a lung removed due to the pneumonia, but in March of 2010 was well enough to receive a stem cell transplant from his older brother Mitch who was a perfect match! It is because of this procedure that Nic is alive today - he is truly a miracle boy.

He has now been cancer-free for over a year. We are so grateful. In January of this year, he was walking on a Minneapolis street and stepped on a patch of ice and flew up in the air, then crashed down and broke his upper femur in two places. He had to have immediate surgery to repair the hip and leg and spent the next 3 months in a wheelchair and using a walker.

He has many side effects from his treatments – including Graft v/s Host disease affecting his eyes and gastrointestinal system, neuropathy in his feet and legs, and muscle atrophy among other things. He still visits his clinic several times per week, and take many medications both orally and IV 4 times per day.

He is surviving, but we want to help him to thrive! He is living on a very small income and doesn’t have enough money to pay his bills and live independently. The money raised at his benefit was very appreciated but is now used up. He needs a minimum of $600/month to cover his expenses. Since he got sick before he was able to ever work a job in his field of expertise, he gets only a small amount of Social Security Disability and the county pays for about $70/month for food. He isn’t able to work yet at this time because his hip is still healing and the other side effects really limit him. He hopes to go back to school to get his Master’s degree but in the mean time needs money to live.

We set up this fundraising account to try to help him out. We set a goal that will allow him to cover his expenses (very minimally) for the next year or two. He pays for rent, food, utilities, telephone and internet, interest on his student loans, gas and parking, and a little clothing.

If everyone that knows Nic would simply pass this information on to everyone in their network, we can meet our goal. No skills or expertise needed – just share his need and ask everyone to “give forward”. Some groups are organizing candy sales, walks or runs, or other ways to raise funds, but a simple donation is the best gift.

We are just trying to help this one cancer survivor not just survive, but THRIVE! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for contributing to Nic’s account and for passing this along to others that are willing to help.

Hugs for Antifungals for Nic.

Well, it's the last "formal" week of our fundraiser. I will continue to sell tutus and plaques, but our Give Forward fund will be paid out. Thank you for your generous donations - but we are far from our goal! I believe we can make it to $10,000 if we all give a great push! Ask everyone you know to donate $10 and we will do it! That's just a couple lattes and it will make a great difference to Nic! Thank you -

Fundraising Update

June 28th, 2011

Some people wonder why we have such a strange name for this fundraiser – Antifungals for Nic.  Here’s the story – When Nic was initially diagnosed with leukemia, the reason he was so sick was that he had pneumonia caused by a fungal infection.  Fungal infections are notoriously hard to get rid of, and he fought for his life for months.  When we did our first Leukemia Light the Night walk, we were trying to decide on a name for our team and we just felt “Anti-fungals” was the best thing we could wish for!  We decided to continue the tradition with this fundraiser as well.

We have currently raised more than $2000 and have 222 members on our Facebook Page.  Thank you SO MUCH for your help in spreading the word!!  We are so grateful for good family and friends that have rallied to help us out.  We have much more coming!!

We had two sets of cousins that have done lemonade/bake sales and raised almost $300!  Tomorrow, the kids of Vivid Imageare holding a Lemon-Aid sale on their front lawn in Hutchinson from 10 AM – 1 PM!  Please drive up the circle drive and give them a generous donation!  Thanks so much for this great “Pay It Forward” event!

Next – we have tutus!!  My nieces in Chicago are creating red, white, and blue “10 Buck Tutus” to sell – all proceeds go to Nic.  We are creating them here as well, so please let me know how many you would like to order!!

They are $10 each.  Shipping is $2 for one, $4 for as many as you want.  You can send me a check or PayPal to catalyst54@gmail.com.

Finally, I have created 5 colors of my “Always Remember” plaque.  100% of the proceeds from the sale of these cute signs will go to Nic’s fund.  They are 6×6? cafe-mount prints.  They have a matte finish and are ready to hang.  Each sign is $16 and shipping is $4 total!  Same payment info as above.

Visit my blog at www.terrykempfert.com for photos of the items for sale -

Don’t forget to keep passing the word on – that is the ONLY way we are advertising this fundraiser.  Word of mouth is amazing!  Ask folks to join our Facebook PageAnd here is the link for the fundraising page – details are there about how you can help.  Thank you again – it takes a village!

Thank you everyone - we are thrilled with all of the support...

The Kempfert Family and friends -

We are off to a great start!

June 19th, 2011

Well, our fundraiser is only a week old and we have already raised over $1200!!  We have had many great donations on this site, and folks have also sent money directly to our bank and have done some great fundraisers and forwarded the funds.

Our little nephews in Aurora Il, raised $35 selling lemonade at their garage sale, and our cousins in Ewen, Michigan raised $120 with another $120 match - selling treats and just spreading the word!  We are so thrilled!  The kids of Vivid Image in Hutchinson are donating all the proceeds from their lemonade stand on June 29th to Nic's fund.  We are so grateful for their efforts.

We have a few surprises coming.  Red, White and Blue tutus for the little ones to celebrate 4th of July - photos coming soon.  My sister-in-law's knitting group is selling their creations for Nic.  And we are working on a exhibition hockey game this fall!  We have details to work out, but it is sure to be fun...

We are so grateful for all of the love and support everyone is sending.  Thank you all for your kind words and your donations - you have made "Survive and Thrive" a reality!
